Beginning -1865  As the Civil War occurred, women's suffrage was put to a stop so the women could focus on the war and taking care of soldiers, families, and the work that fighting men could not do.  Women organized ladies’ aid societies to supply the Union troops with everything they needed  Food  Clothing  Money

And So On  Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony form the American Equal Rights Association, an organization dedicated to the goal of suffrage for all regardless of gender or race (1866)  “Men, their rights and nothing more; women, their rights and nothing less!” (1868)  The American Equal Rights Association is wrecked by disagreements over the Fourteenth Amendment and the question of whether to support the proposed Fifteenth Amendment which would enfranchise Black American males while avoiding the question of woman suffrage entirely(1869)

15 th Amendment 1870 During the Reconstruction era leading figures in the movement unsuccessfully demanded women's suffrage to be included in the 15 amendment which granted the vote to African American men. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth and Susan B. Anthony opposed Reconstruction Amendments because they excluded women.

We never go out of style  The Reconstruction era contained a comprehensive selection of women's styles from the years immediately following the American civil war.  By the late 1867 a large selection of Elliptical dress skirt of the mid 1860s had evolved into a smaller looped-up,” Polonaise “ over skirts  Followed fashions from “Marie Antoinette “ fichus as well as “Watteau "black pleats, “Pompadour” necklines  A magazine called Harpers Bazar published the most sophisticated fashions. Which promoted women to make their own clothing.

Where can I vote ?  Suffrage was a distant goal but the women's movement did make slow progress on expanding the legal rights of women within family and guaranteeing their property rights  During the reconstruction era people such as Lucy stone and abolitionist Frederick Douglass believed women suffrage could wait until after African Americans had won civil and voting rights  The Woman’s Journal is founded and edited by Mary Livermore, Lucy Stone, and Henry Blackwell.

After Reconstruction  A Woman Suffrage Amendment is proposed in the U.S. Congress. When the 19th Amendment passes forty-one years later, it is worded exactly the same as this 1878 Amendment.

COOL FACT!!!  More than 400 women disguised themselves as men and fought in the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War.  Frances Clayton was a woman who disguised herself as a man named Jack Williams in order to fight in the Union Army. She served in Missouri artillery and cavalry units for several months
