Chapter 1: Called to Holiness

Anticipatory Set Look at your textbook on page 3. In blue writing is an excerpt from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Read the paragraph carefully, then shrink it down to include only the most IMPORTANT messages. It should be NO MORE THAN 4 simple sentences.

Called to be Perfect Jesus told us to seek perfection Is this possible in this lifetime? What about the next? How do we strive for perfection? We imitate Jesus! - We love one another, we show mercy, we forgive… - We must strive for holiness, and we must have a relationship with God.

Called to Holiness Life as a pilgrimage Through Baptism, we are called to begin a journey toward heaven and toward perfection. This includes believing what God has revealed to us and seeking to do his will in all things—especially in loving our neighbor.

The USCCB and the CCC What is the Catechism of the Catholic Church? - Outlines the beliefs and teachings of the Church in 4 parts based on the Nicene Creed - Published by JP II in 1992/updated in 1997 - Online searchable version: - http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text

Vatican II Most recent of 21 Ecumenical councils held throughout Church history. Councils can only be convened by the Pope. They gather the Bishops of the world to discuss matters of Church doctrine, practice, etc. Vatican II met at St. Peter’s Basilica (the Vatican) in Rome

Vatican II About renewal of the Church 1962-1965 Bishops issued several documents (Encyclicals) Lumen Gentium (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church) and Gaudium et Spes (Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World)

Called to Be Saints We are called to be holy witnesses to Christ in all circumstances. Many holy women and men throughout history demonstrated exceptional holiness: love for neighbor and witness to God. The Church officially recognizes these people as SAINTS.

Who’s a saint? Capital ‘S’ and lowercase ‘s’: we are all saints IF we are a member of the faithful who seeks to live a holy life! St. Paul refers to the living faithful as saints. The Church refers to this as the Communion of Saints.

Famous Saints St. Augustine– made one of the biggest U-turns in history… St. Paul, the Apostle The Martyrs- men and women who were persecuted during the early church and died for their faith There have been martyrs throughout history
