Something to think about…. What is the purpose of government?

Monarchy Vs. Democracy

Monarchy A form of government where all the political power is with one person, known as a monarch. A monarch is the “Head of State” until death, or until they resign from office. There are two primary types of Monarchy: –Absolute –Constitutional

Absolute Monarchy The monarch has unlimited power to rule. They have absolute power over the state and the government. An absolute monarch can make laws and enforce punishments.

Constitutional Monarchy In this form, the monarch is largely ceremonial, and has to follow a constitution. Political aspects rest with the people as represented by parliament. Have limited power, but are seen as a form of continuity for the State. They do have certain privileges and rights to: protection, criminal immunity, and official residence.

Democracy Political form of government where power comes from the people. Equality and freedom are seen as important principles of democracy. There are two different types of democracy: –Direct- an assembly of all citizens who choose to participate. –Representative

Representative Democracy Those who represent this form of government are chosen, or elected, by the people. People are seen as equal before the law, and have equal access to power. Every vote carries equal weight. Rights and freedoms of citizens are carried out through a constitution. Must be legislated carefully so one branch does not gain most of the power (checks and balances).

Post Revolutionary Government Articles of Confederation The Articles of Confederation are what drove the national government (became official government in 1781). Government was run by a Confederation congress. Instead of the people having a vote, each state had only 1 vote in congress. Had the power to wage war, make peace, sign treaties, and issue money. The Articles left the most important powers to the state (set taxes & enforce national laws) The Articles allowed the states to control the lands west of the Appalachian Mountains.

Questions that need answers… 1.What type of government do we have in the United States? 2.Why do nations have different governments? 3.How does the government affect your daily life? 4.What does the U.S. Government do?
