Organization of Matter What levels are there?

Sub-atomic Particles: Make up atoms Ex.Quarks, Leptons make up Electrons, Neutrons, Protons Levels of Organization Atoms: Smallest whole unit of matter Ex. Elements like Hydrogen, Helium, Oxygen, Carbon Molecule: 2 or more atoms, not necessarily the same Ex. Nitrogen gas (N 2 ), Water (H 2 O), Salt (NaCl)

Levels of Organization Continued Organelle: Organized structure in a cell, cell parts Ex. DNA, RNA, Cell membrane, Nucleus, Chloroplast Macromolecules: Organic molecules that make up most living things Ex. Proteins ( meat, beans, enzymes ), Lipids ( fats oils, waxes ), Carbohydrates ( sugars, starches ), Nucleic Acids ( nucleotides )

Levels of Organization Continued Tissue: Several cells with common job Ex. Muscle, bone, nervous tissue Cell: Smallest living unit, can also be ORGANISM Ex. Eukaryotic (Plant, liver); Prokaryotic (bacteria) Organ: Several tissues that have one or more jobs that make up a separate part of the body Ex. Heart, Lungs, Brain, spleen

Organ system: One or more organs working together for general function Ex. Digestive, nervous Organism: Unique individual/ Living thing Ex. Human, Oak tree, Mouse, Bacteria, Paramecium Levels of Organization Continued

Population: All individuals of 1 species in an area Ex. Herd of elephants, Gaggle of geese, Pack of wolves Community: All living things (organisms) in one area Ex. Living organisms in forest, plain Levels of Organization Continued Biome: Living and non-living factors in fixed area Ex. Amazon Rain Forest, Sahara Desert

Ecosystem: All living and non-living factors in a geographic type (all biomes of same type) Ex. Taiga, Tundra, Desert Biosphere: All living environments on Earth Ex. Earth (as far as we know) Gaia? Levels of Organization Continued

Solar System: Sun, all planets, dwarf planets, plus Kuiper belt Galaxy: All solar systems in fixed array Ex. Milky way (ours), Andromeda Universe: All know material from Big Bang Ex. Everything known to humanity Levels of Organization Beyond Biology
