5 Focus/Introduction What happens when we multiply two numbers? Is the product larger or smaller than the multiplicand?” (The product is larger.) 3 x 5 = 15. Isn’t 15 larger than 3? Explore a couple of other examples as needed. Do you think this will be the same if we multiply a number by a number that is less than 1? When we multiply a number by a number smaller than one, the product is a smaller number. For example, 2 x ½ = 1. We will explore this concept as well as others involving fractions and the four mathematical operations in this lesson.

11 Method 3: Product of Primes 1.Find all prime factors for each numerator and denominator. 2.Cross out all like factors in the numerator and denominator. 3.Multiply all remaining numbers to get the answer. Your number is automatically reduced using this method. Also, if all factors in the numerator or denominator are crossed out, the value remaining is 1.
