Whole Number and Decimal Operations

Bell Ringer: Page 15 in JBHM binder (DOK 1)

Guided Practice: Subtraction of Whole Numbers When you perform subtraction, you are doing the opposite of addition. The number you are starting with is the minuend. The number you are taking away is the subtrahend. Your answer is called the difference. In setting up a subtraction problem, the numbers must always line up correctly.

Introduction/Focus: Why do we need to learn to subtract? Would you want to know at times how many points the Tigers scored more than the Trojans? Let’s say the Tigers scored 48 points and the Trojans scored 23 points. By how many points did the Tigers win?

There are several words that indicate the operation of subtraction: minus, less, less than, difference between, decreased by, etc. Remember to line the columns up by place value. Turn to page 45 and 46 in your binder notes.

765 919 - 453-112 699 591 -572-370

9,345,234 -5,123,456 Because 4<6 you have to borrow: 3 tens = 2 tens +1 ten. Borrow 1 ten from the tens column and write 10 in the ones column. Add the borrowed 10 to the 4 and change the 3 to a 2

Always check your answer! 9,345,234 4,221,778 -5,123,456 so+5,123,456 4,221,778 9,345,234

Independent Work/Activity: (DOK 2) Two number cubes Each student is to roll a number cube seven times and record the number he or she rolls. Each roll of the number cube provides a digit for a seven-digit number. Each pair of students will add the numbers created by the cube. Compare your answers. All work should be shown to receive credit. You must create five problems a piece and work them correctly by showing all of your work to receive your grade.

Closure: Explain the process of adding and subtracting whole numbers using complete sentences.

Homework: 1.5,083,693 – 2,968,395 2.378,562 – 98,648 3. 45,200 – 4,587
