Defining Service-Learning Service-learning- “Service-learning is a credit- bearing, educational experience in which students: 1) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified on- and off-campus community needs and 2) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility” (). How I became involved in Service- Learning This year as a freshman in college, I knew that I needed to be involved in a learning community. One of the requirements for VSU 1101is getting involved with our city and providing community service to the Valdosta area.

Benefits of Service-Learning Increase your understanding of the class topic. Improve your ability to handle ambiguity and be open to change; become more flexible Develop or enhance your skills, especially in the areas of communication, collaboration, and leadership

Benefits Cont. Gain hands-on experience (possibly leading to an internship or job later) Learn more about social issues and their root causes Grow a professional network of people you might connect with again later for jobs or internships Test out your skills, interests, and values in a potential career path, or learn more about a field that interests you

How Service-Learning Affected Me: Service-learning provided a positive impact, because I love making a difference and volunteering my time to better my community.

Service Projects I Completed Kappa Delta Shamrock: I participated in the flag football tournament that was put on for Kappa Delta’s spring philanthropy event which is prevention of child abuse. Elementary School Bookfair: I worked at the bookfair as a volunteer for a local elementary school. Animal Shelter Volunteer: I took time out of my schedule to help take care of the animals that live at the shelter.
