SERVICE-LEARNING Lauren Burns

Defining Service-Learning  Service-learning- “Service-learning is a credit- bearing, educational experience in which students: 1) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified on- and off-campus community needs and 2) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility” (). Committee Minutes, January 25, 2001

How I became involved in Service- Learning  This year as a freshman in college, I knew that I needed to be involved in a learning community. One of the requirements for VSU 1101is getting involved with our city and providing community service to the Valdosta area.

Benefits of Service-Learning  Increase your understanding of the class topic.  Improve your ability to handle ambiguity and be open to change; become more flexible  Develop or enhance your skills, especially in the areas of communication, collaboration, and leadership

Benefits Cont.  Gain hands-on experience (possibly leading to an internship or job later)  Learn more about social issues and their root causes  Grow a professional network of people you might connect with again later for jobs or internships  Test out your skills, interests, and values in a potential career path, or learn more about a field that interests you

Benefits Cont.  Have opportunities to act on your values and beliefs  Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills  Connect with professionals and community members who you will learn from  Explore or cement your values and beliefs  Grow your understanding of diverse cultures and communities

How Service-Learning Affected Me:  Service-learning provided a positive impact, because I love making a difference and volunteering my time to better my community.

Service Projects I Completed  Kappa Delta Shamrock: I participated in the flag football tournament that was put on for Kappa Delta’s spring philanthropy event which is prevention of child abuse.  Elementary School Bookfair: I worked at the bookfair as a volunteer for a local elementary school.  Animal Shelter Volunteer: I took time out of my schedule to help take care of the animals that live at the shelter.
