1 Scientific Method

2 Problem/Purpose State the problem in the form of a question that includes the independent and dependent variable (Will a hard boiled egg float in salt water?)

3 Educated guess to solving the problem that includes the independent and dependent variables.
Hypothesis If the independent variable increases or decreases, then the dependent variable will increase or decrease. If the amount of salt added to the water increases, then the hard boiled egg will float)

4 Variables Parts of the experiment independent dependent constant

5 Independent (I.V.) The scientist (you) change on purpose.
(amount of salt)

6 Dependent (D.V.) The response from the change made to the independent variable. Results (float or not float)

7 The item that does not change at all. It stays the same
Constant (C.V.) The item that does not change at all. It stays the same Same beakers, same amount of water, same type of salt, Same spoon, same classroom. Control No variable is applied to the item

8 (test 3 times for accuracy)
Experiment Design an experiment to test your problem using the three (3) types of variables (test 3 times for accuracy) constant independent dependent no change amount of salt float or not float

9 Record Findings Data Table Graph
Make a data table showing your results Graph Make a graph to visually show your results.

10 Restate your hypothesis with the results from your experiment
Conclusion Should be at least 3 paragraphs for formal experiments.
