2 Imagine you are a political writer in 1800. Write a 5 sentence paragraph promoting either Adams or Jefferson.

3 How did the Alien & Sedition Acts hurt the Federalists?

4  Many people upset with Federalists, felt A&S Acts violated the Const. & discriminated  Electoral tie between Jefferson and Burr, flaw in Constitution  House debated for 6 days – Hamilton persuaded Federalists to back Jefferson (more qualified), Adams left office peacefully

5  Read the literature selection from Burr.  After reading, circle the evidence for to the following questions: 1) Who is telling the story? 2) How did he feel on the morning of the duel? 3) How did he feel about Hamilton? 4) What is his biggest regret about the incident?

6 How did the Election of 1800 impact American government and politics?

7  Led to passage of 12 th Amendment in 1804 – stated delegates must vote separately for President and VP  South began to dominate politics – Location of DC, frontier settlers supported DRs, Federalist influence declined

8 Read page 216 “History’s Voices” What were Jefferson’s goals as president? How did he go about accomplishing those goals?

9  Jefferson tried to bring public together & lead “Revolution of 1800” to restore Republican ideals

10 1) Changed tax system (customs duties and land sales) 2) Reduced size of Executive 3) Shrank size of army and navy (but founded West Point and later started a navy buildup due to the Barbary Wars in Mediterranean)

11  1802 – Spain closed port of New Orleans. Then made secret treaty with France to return land  April 1803 –Jefferson sent 2 people to negotiate purchase of New Orleans, Napoleon sold entire territory for $15 million, doubling size of nation.

12 1) What Constitutional problem might the purchase present? What did Jefferson decide? 2) What new problems might the LA Purchase present for the US and Native Americans?

13  President did not have Constitutional authority to purchase land. Jefferson & supporters decided it was inherent power of president.  Increased conflict with natives in territory.

14  Most famous western expeditions was Corps of Discovery  May 1804 – Meriwether Lewis led expedition from St. Louis to Pacific, Clark was 2 nd in command, group of 50 people - Sacagawea – Shoshone interpreter & guide - Reached Pacific in November 1805  Identified boundaries and many new species of plants & animals  1805, Zebulon Pike traveled 2,000 miles looking for source of Mississippi, then Southwest

15  You are appointed to be a member of the Corps of Discovery. Work together to determine what you will bring on the trip. Write a list of at least 5 items. Then write a letter to Thomas Jefferson explaining what you are seeing and experiencing on the journey.

16  Write a journal entry from a member of the Corps of Discovery: What are you seeing and experiencing on this journey?

17  Read actual journal entries of Lewis & Clark, answer 3 questions. How does this compare to your “journal entries”?  Complete reading Sacagawea. Answer questions at the end.

18 What were “midnight judges” and why did Adams appoint them?

19  Judiciary Act of 1801 – Feds passed before Jefferson became president so Adams could appoint more judges (Midnight Judges)  Not all judges received their commissions before Adams left office, so they were unable to take office  William Marbury sued Jefferson’s Secretary of State James Madison for refusing to deliver his paperwork, used Judiciary Act of 1789 as basis.

20  Q: What was the decision of the Supreme Court and how did it relate to the system of checks and balances?

21  John Marshall (Adams’ Sec of State who had failed to deliver commissions) was now Chief Justice  SC decided that Judiciary Act of 1789 was unconstitutional – Const. does not give Supreme Court the power to force Executive Branch to deliver paperwork  Affirmed judicial review and showed checks & balances worked.
