2 Introduction: Oils get contaminated during course of operation in machine tools. Major causes of disposal are Suspended Solids, Water, Acid residues and oxidation residues. The idea behind the system is to apply the concept of “Treat and Reuse”. Recovered oil is fit for reuse; back in the machine. Recovered oil can be reused many times till the oil loses it’s properties.

3 Contaminants and their removal: Water: Essentially due to condensation at high temperature. Removed by: 1. Desorber; 2. Fullers Earth Filtration; 3. Low Vacuum Dehydration. Suspended Solids: Removed by: 1. Stainless Steel washable Bag Filter (25,5, 2 & 1 microns); 2. Electrostatic liquid cleaner. Oxidation and acid residues: Removed by: 1. Fullers Earth Filtration. 2. Electrostatic Liquid Cleaner. Oil Oxidation By Products Water Suspended Solids

4 Operational Sequence: Oil is fed by gravity to Desorber where free water, solid sludge are removed. The outlet from Desorber is stored in Prep Tank. The oil is fed into HydroFree, a coalescer based water removal equipment. The oil is fed into a 25 Micron Bag filter for large particles removal. Then it passed through fuller’s earth filtration for acid residues removal. The outlet from fullers earth filter is passed through 5,2 and 1 micron bag filters for suspended solids removal. After filtration, the oil is stored in LVDH feed tank before being fed into Low Vacuum Dehydration Equipment for moisture removal. The outlet from LVDH is fed into Electro Static liquid cleaner for sub micron particle and oxidation residues removal.

7 Filtration: 25 Micron filter: Stainless Steel backwashable filter of filtering capacity 25 microns Fullers Earth filtration: In addition to its application of water removal, the fullers earth removes acid residues from oil and restores some colour. 9 Low Vacuum Dehydration Equipment: Oil is preheated to 53 degrees C. The preheated oil is fed into the vacuum chamber and the water evaporates at the reduced pressure. The water vapour flowing through the air line is condensed in a heat exchanger before drained out. The oil is drained periodically in the vacuum chamber and pumped out for use.

10 Electro Static Liquid Cleaner: Oil is fed into a high voltage electric field. The positive and negative charged plates inside the ELC repels the same charge and the sub micron particles get to the centre of the charged area. In the central portion a cellulose acetate collector is present which attaches the particles with it. The neutrally charged particles also get attached to the collector plate. Oxidation residues which are basically carbon particles also gets attached to the collector. The oil coming out of the ELC will have the sub micron and residual particles removed.

11 Benefits: Waste Oil converted to usable oil. The characteristics of new oil is restored to nearly 90% f its original value. Oil can be treated periodically to maintain its quality and reused back in the machine. Systems are modular and can be augmented for increased capacities.
