5  Read chapter 3 in the book.  In your reading log answer the following questions… 1.Which notorious SS officer did they meet at Auschwitz? 2.What prayer were the people saying? Why was it unusual? 3.What did Elie do when the gypsy struck his father? Why? What was his father’s response? 4.At this point, how long had Elie and his father been at Auschwitz (page 44)? Where did they go after that? 5.What is the overall mood of this chapter? Remember mood is the atmosphere the writer creates for the reader (how the reader feels). How has the mood changed from the very beginning of the book? List 5 words that give support for your mood. 6.Sketch a memorable scene from the chapters you have read. 6  Take your prewriting from last class period and write the introduction for your letter.  Remember your introduction should have background information (use what the prompt gives you in the writing situation)  Also your thesis (the statement that explains what the entire paper is about) should also be in your introduction. 7  We can use the candy wrapper model to help organize the structural components! Use this model to help organize your writing.

8 Candy Wrapper Model- Structural Components HOOK/INTRO Start broadly to engage reader. (Background info) BODY Brainstorm what stories, facts, quotes, etc. you want to include. Don’t forget support! CONCLUSION Restate point and leave audience with something memorable Clearly state your POINT for writing here! THESIS

9 Candy Wrapper Model The hook/introduction should hook the reader and state your point-like the wrapper of the piece of candy. The body should have reasons and support for the reader to savor–like savoring the sweet taste of the candy. The conclusion should restate your point and leave the audience with something to remember-like the wrapper that’s left after eating the candy.
