Learning Objectives: To describe how the body uses energy To explain what is meant by respiration Analyse the energy requirements of different people Starter: The next slide has different athletes – you need to rank them from which you think burns the most calories to the least

Results Football – 612 per hour Darts – 170 per hour Boxing - 816 per hour Golf – 306 per hour Netball – 506 per hour Gymnastics – 272 per hour Basketball – 544 per hour Horse Riding – 272 per hour

Using Energy Where do we get our energy from? When you are walking on a cold day what is some of the energy in your body being used for? When you are sleeping what is some of the energy used for?

Food labels Energy is measured in units known as kilojoules (kJ). Energy is also measured in calories (kcal). 1 calorie = 4.2 kJ

Energy and nutrients Food and drinks provide us with different amounts of energy because of the variety of nutrients they contain. 1g protein provides 17kJ (4 kcal). 1g carbohydrate provides 16kJ (3.75 kcal). 1g fat provides 37kJ (9 kcal).

Activity Look at your food labels. In groups discuss: oHOW MUCH ENERGY IS IN EACH ONE? oHOW MUCH SUGAR (CARBOHYDRATES) AND FAT IS IN IT? oWHAT TIME OF THE DAY SHOULD YOU EAT THIS FOOD? oDO YOU THINK YOU WOULD HAVE TO DO MUCH EXERCISE AFTER EATING THIS FOOD?

Check Point Learning Objectives: To describe how the body uses energy To explain what is meant by respiration Analyse the energy requirements of different people

Look at Page: 14 – Discuss with your row the three questions about energy with Age!

higher – reach up lower – touch your toes

Check Point Learning Objectives: To describe how the body uses energy To explain what is meant by respiration Analyse the energy requirements of different people

from the digestive system from the breathing system useful! waste product exhaled This type of respiration is called aerobic respiration because energy is released with oxygen. Respiration is the process that the body uses to release energy from digested food (glucose): What is respiration? carbon dioxide glucose oxygen water energy How do the glucose and oxygen needed for aerobic respiration get to the all the body’s cells?

Aerobic respiration: word equation activity
