Jan 16-20

Journal  I will start the timer…remember you should be writing the entire time.  This is just to get you to write-get thoughts and ideas on paper  Where would you prefer to be right now- mountains, desert, beach- and why?  Which is least important to you – money, power, fame- and why?  I wish there really was…if there really was, then…

Current events  You should have info AND a reaction to at least 1 current event  To make sure everyone is getting the information they need, if you plan to share a current event (which I will start keeping track of and award points) will need to stand at your table and share your event.  Again you will need the following information:  Title/headline/topic of current event  Important or interesting point within the topic  Publication information  Impact: local, national, international  Your reaction

 Its 1953, and the TV is a novelty. Sen. Joseph McCarthy uses fear, falsehoods and belligerence to become arguably the most powerful man in the U.S.  Newsman Edward R. Murrow, who has had his fill of the senator’s tactics, fights back.  Watch carefully- you will have a couple different tasks to complete that go along with the movie! Good Night and Good Luck

 Write a reaction paper to one of the following prompts. It should be at least 5 paragraphs. Murrow tells his boss, Sig Mickelson, he’s searched his conscience and doesn’t think there are always “two equal and logical sides to every story.” Mickelson accuses him of editorializing in his coverage. Discuss the ethical challenges to journalists then and now when it comes to giving more than one side of a story. Murrow and Friendly use the Milo Radulovich story as the “little picture” to tell more about the McCarthy situation. Does media use that approach today? In what way and how successful do you think it is? Reaction
