1 The Original Ten Amendments: the Bill of Rights By Miss Oberlander To the tune of “The Life I Lead” from Mary Poppins

2 C The Bill of Rights are the G first 10 amendments G That come at the end of the C US Constitution C They state our freedoms and our rights F That can’t be taken away CFC They protect us from our government!

3 C Amendment 1 was taken from G George Mason G The freedom of religion, speech, C and press C It states that we the people of F the United States CG Can assemble in a meeting C place

4 C Amendment 2: the right G to keep and bear arms G To protect your family and C your home C When used in self defense F Or tyranny’s expense C This amendment cannot GC be infringed upon.

5 CG Amendment 3 keeps us from quartering soldiers GC Our homes are not military barracks C The Quartering Act of ‘65 F Won’t interfere with our lives CGC Amendment 3 protects our property

6 C Amendment 4 prevents G searches and seizures. G The police must have a warrant C to enter C They can’t take our stuff away F Or make us pay CGC Our homes are protected today

7 C Amendment 5: we’re innocent G til found guilty G The government can’t put us in jail C for no reason C When suspected of a crime F A jury in time CGC Will pardon or punish what’s fair.

8 C G Amendment 6 is the right to fair trial G It guarantees you the right to a C lawyer C Speedy means: can’t wait too long F Secret trials would be wrong CGC To keep things truthful, fair, and free

9 C Amendment 7: a jury in G civil cases GC A group of random citizens C They together will decide F The outcome derived C So no one person has total GC power to rule

10 C Amendment 8 forbids G extreme punishment G Outlaws “cruel and C unusual” consequence C no excessive penalties F unless the crime agrees C It protects us when we’ve GC done some wrong.

11 CG Amendment 9 says freedom is the way GC There are other necessary rights C And even if they are not listed F In the Constitution CGC The government should respect those too!

12 C Amendment 10 says the G power is the people’s G The state governments have C important rights too C No one dictator can say F There’s only one way CG Liberty gives us the say in the C USA! Hey!
