Summary of Tasks and Instructions You will be looking at the painting called ‘Weeping Woman’ by the artist Pablo Picasso and you will make a project based on his work and the Cubism styles you are studying in lessons. You will then create tonal drawings of peoples faces from different viewpoints. The people you draw should be showing a strong emotion e.g. Surprise, sadness, anger. You will then re-draw this image using the same style and colours as Picasso has for his ‘Weeping Woman’. You are expected to complete this booklet and submit the following 3 pieces of work: 1.A study sheet based on Picasso and his painting ‘The Weeping Women’ 2.Your own drawings of people showing emotion. One drawing will be a frontal view, the other a profile view. (see below for details). 3.A final piece where you combine your drawings from Part 2, but drawn in the style of Picasso’s ‘ Weeping Woman’. You will use the same colours that Picasso has in his painting. You will use one or more of the following materials to complete this piece: coloured pencils, collage, paint. Task 1: HINT To help you complete Task 1 accurately you will need to do some research either in a book or on the computer. Here is a list of some suggested websites: http://www.inminds.com/weepi ng-woman-picasso-1937.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Th e_Weeping_Woman http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artw orks/picasso-weeping-woman- t06929 http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artw orks/picasso-weeping-woman- t05010

Write at least 2 sentences (or more) about how the colours, the lines and the style of this painting help to create the mood or feeling you can sense in this piece. (HINT: use your lists of descriptive words to help!) Describe in your own words how Picasso has shown the pain that this woman is feeling? TASK 3 – Your version of ‘The Weeping Woman’ In the box below, or on a separate piece of paper, you will create your final piece using all previous research and drawings. 1. Look carefully at ‘The Weeping Woman’ and note how Picasso has used two different viewpoints of a face. The edge of the face looks like a profile, but we can still see two eyes and two nostrils. Try to recreate a similar design using your drawings from Task 2. 2. Now look again at how Picasso has used lots of straight and jagged lines and edges. Make parts of your design more broken, sharp and jagged. 3. Look back at the list of colours you wrote down in Task 1. Use these colours to fill in all the different sections of your design. Include a background! (You can use one, or all three materials listed: coloured pencils, paint, collage) 4. To finish off your piece make some lines and edges bolder than others to help make different parts stand out. 5. Is there any other technique you can use of Picasso’s? If the answer is yes – USE IT!!!
