My Picasso Cubist Self-Portrait This is a two week lesson. In this lesson we will: Learn some facts about Pablo Picasso Look at some of his Cubist Portraits Create self portraits in a Cubist style using the computer Picasso, self portrait

Pablo Ruiz Picasso Picasso was born in Spain on October 25, 1881. He began to draw when he was 7 years old. His father was an art teacher. He is the most famous artist of the 20 th century He died in 1973. He has 3 museums dedicated to his work. One is in Spain and 2 are in France. Vocabulary Portrait: The drawing or painting of a particular person. Geometric Shapes: Are precise forms such as squares, circles, triangles and rectangles. Cubism: An artistic style, that describes paintings of a person, place or thing that are made of geometric shapes and many different perspectives. Abstract: Art that changes realistic things into un-realistic things by using patterns and shapes. Sometimes they become so un-realistic that you cannot even recognize what they are (non-representational).

Picasso’s Cubist Portraits Cubism: An artistic style, that describes paintings of a person, place or thing using geometric shapes and different perspectives.

Project: My Picasso Cubist Self-Portrait 1. Using a digital camera, take a photograph of your face looking straight at the camera. Then, take another photo of the side your face (profile). 2. Save the photos onto the computer with your name in your class folder. 3. Go to Start; then all Programs; Accessories; then click on Paint. Once in the program, go to File; Open; change the Look In: to the file where you saved your photographs. 4. Open the first photo and use the star select tool (1st tool in the box) to select only part of your face. Go to edit; and copy. 5. Go to File; Open; select the other photograph. 6. Then go to Edit; Paste; and Image; un-check Draw Opaque.

Project: My Picasso Cubist Self-Portrait 7. If you make a mistake – go to Edit; Undo. 8. Once the face part is in the general position; you may need to make it fit better. Go to Image; Stretch/Skew. Fill in the table with numbers to change the size of the photo. 9. Use the bucket tool to change the background color of your image. The color picker is at the bottom. 10. Begin to draw over the photos with the paint brush. It is the 4 th tool down to the right. You can change the size of the brush stroke by the selection at the bottom of the tool box. 11. Completely paint over the underlying photos to complete your Cubist self portrait.

You learned that if you morph 2 photos of yourself together and paint them as one face it looks like Picasso’s Cubist style.
