3 Introduction to Logfiller
Headquarters in Jersey C.I with offices in America and Germany. 25 Staff Globally, increasing weekly Sales, Marketing, Technical Support and Development/Integrations Departments. Key Milestones. Sept 2013: Patent applied for Layer8 software June 2014: Logfiller opens offices in Jersey Channel Islands UK & Virginia USA. August 2014: Splunk technology partner agreement signed October/November 2014: V2 launched at Gherkin London and Splunk Live Las Vegas. April 2015: v3 launch and rebrand

4 What is Layer8? Layer8 is patent pending technology that provides powerful user experience insight to help improve operational efficiency, cyber security and compliance with systems and applications Instructions for slide: Give the customer a chance to read this one sentence to explain exactly what Layer8 is. Then clarify by saying: “No matter what else we are talking about during the course of the presentation and demo, in terms of breadth or depth – simply remember that Layer8 is measuring the User Experience across ALL applications for ALL users at ALL times, from logon on to logoff. The Layer8 dataset contains everything the user experiences in between.”

5 Questions to consider…
What challenges around User Experience do you have? How long do your users take to logon in the morning? Is Windows XP faster than Windows 7, or are Virtual Desktops faster than physical systems? Can you list all applications (and specific versions) that are actively being used across your network? Can you measure the impact on the user experience upgrading to a new version of an application, OS or web browser? Are your users actually using your licensed applications? Could you use cheaper / free alternatives? Can you measure system performance trends over time? What is the true User Experience for remote workers using terminal services / Citrix? Can you tell if your users are bypassing web controls by using anonymous proxies? Can you discover unexpected system use - out of hours, or at weekends perhaps? Can you irrefutably monitor Web browsing habits and activity? Instructions for slide: Give the customer a chance to read through these questions (DON’T read them out one by one!) Say to them: “We’d like to know what User Experience means to you and what challenges you have had, either historic or current that you would like to be addressed by a User Experience product. Some sample questions that we know other customers have come across are being displayed on the screen now to help you with identifying any key pain points you might have had in the past or are trying to mitigate at the moment. If you can think of 2-3 examples which are relevant to you we can make sure that we focus on that during the presentation to make it as relevant to you as possible.”

6 Layer8 Technology – Critical New Insights
Layer8 from Logfiller taps a new data source; the interface between the system and the user; what we call Layer8, allowing critical insights into what occurs at the boundary between machine and user. The Open Systems Interconnection model (OSI Model) is commonly made up of 7 layers from Physical hardware through to Applications. Layer8 from Logfiller does what is says on the tin, it adds an 8th Layer to the OSI model allowing visibility of User Experience (UX) Only for reference (Technical Reference): The OSI reference model, as described by ISO Standard 7498, provides important guidelines used by vendors, engineers, developers, and others. The model segments the networking tasks, protocols, and services into different layers. Each layer has its own responsibilities regarding how computers communicate over a network. Each layer has certain functionalities, and the services and protocols that work within that layer fulfil them.

7 Benefits of Layer8 insight
This slide is an overview of the benefits that Layer8 provides, take 2 minutes to describe a couple of the benefits from each column, drawing where possible the challenges volunteered by the customer.

8 What can I discover with Layer8 data? (Efficiency)
Use Case 1 Compare User / Application Wait Times. Investigate organisation-wide excessive wait times and who is affected. Use Case 2 Compare Operating Systems Wait Times. Investigate organisation-wide excessive wait times and what is affected. Take 1 minute to discuss one of the use cases described in this slide. There will be included a real screenshot from Splunk, showing the real data/benefit in context to Efficiency. It should still be possible for a non-technical person to be able to describe what is being seen here.

9 What can I discover with Layer8 data? (Cyber Security)
Use Case 1 Unauthorised Applications. Detect the use of unauthorised applications over a two week period. Use Case 2 Application Usage. Indentify total application usage over a two week period Take 1 minute to discuss one of the use cases described in this slide. There will be included a real screenshot from Splunk, showing the real data/benefit in context to Cyber Security. It should still be possible for a non-technical person to be able to describe what is being seen here.

10 What can I discover with Layer8 data? (Compliance)
Use Case 1 Real Web Usage Understand the REAL amount of time websites are the focus of a users attention and not just open in a browser. Use Case 2 License Activation Alerts. Discover machines lacking Windows activation. Take 1 minute to discuss one of the use cases described in this slide. There will be included a real screenshot from Splunk, showing the real data/benefit in context to Compliance. It should still be possible for a non-technical person to be able to describe what is being seen here.

11 Layer8 Components Layer8 generates data via an installed agent, a data forwarder service and web browser extensions installed on each Windows endpoint / server. The following are currently included in the Layer8 installation package: Layer8 User Experience Meter Agent (“uxmtr”) Layer8 Forwarder Service (“dcac”) Layer8 Web Browser extensions for IE and Chrome Both agents (“uxmtr” and “dcac”) are required for all installation endpoints. The browser extensions are optional. Layer8 software is supplied as MSI installers. This content is directly out of the Quick Installation Guides and describes concisely what makes up the Layer8 software and what format it takes. “Layer8 is supplied as MSI installers. The User Experience Meter Agent and the Forwarder Service are mandatory and will sit on each endpoint that is being measured, the browser extensions are optional.” “The User Experience Meter Agent does all the measuring and the Forwarder Service sends that data to the reporting back-end, Splunk in our case.”

12 Deployment Models for Layer8
Manual installation Extract the Layer8 software to any local, network drive letter or UNC share Edit the config file for your deployment Run the single batch file to install all Layer8 components Automated installation via Group Policy Prepare the Layer8 UNC share Enable Read Security Event Logs & Audit Logon Events Create the Group Policy Installation Objects Layer8 can be deployed either manually using a supplied batch script that installs all three MSIs, or it can be deployed en-masse automatically using Group Policy or SCCM. Quick Installation Guides are provided which go through the exact steps for both types of deployment, but it is very straight-forward and zero-config after deployment.

13 How Layer8 Works

14 Distinctly Different from APM

15 Is Layer8 hungry? Layer8 User Experience Meter Agent (“uxmtr”)
<4MB RAM <5MB footprint Layer8 Forwarder Service (“dcac”) <21MB footprint Layer8 has been designed to be as small as possible and produces zero noticeable impact on the system or to the user experience. *Typically Layer8 will spike at < 0.5% CPU, 2-5MB RAM, and 1-10GB temporary disk space.  *Will vary dependant on hardware / software platform In an effort to highlight how little impact Layer8 has on your endpoints and to illustrate how small the footprint is, this slide shows you that Layer8 will consume less than 4Mb of RAM for the User Experience Meter Agent and the Forwarder Service and in total less than 25Mb of disk space. The CPU impact is also negligible, spiking at less than 1% typically.

16 What does Layer8 data look like?
Some example data… Output to CSV, NVP, SysLog, EventLog etc, Purely intended to visualise Layer8 “data” here are some screenshots showing CSV, text and EventLog output. In our use case however Layer8 sends the data directly to Splunk using the NVP format.
