2 What: Cellular Phone Who: Dr. Martin Cooper, a former general manager for the systems division at Motorola, is considered the inventor of the first portable handset and the first person to make a call on a portable cell phone in April 1973. The first call he made was to his rival, Joel Engel, Bell Labs head of research. When: It was invented by a man named Martin Cooper in 1973 while he was working for Motorola. Why: The cell phone was invented because military needed cell phones to communicate. Also, people could communicate from a long distance. Last, cell phones are easy to carry around. Where: The first commercial mobile phone service was launched in Japan by NTT in 1978. How: Its basic function is to allow people separated by large distances to talk to each other. You can also send messages in an instant.

6 What: Telegraph Who: The telegraph was invented by Samuel Morse. When: It was invented in the year 1792. Why: To communicate over longer distances. Where: It was invented in Boston, Massachusetts How: It is used to transmit and receive messages over long distances, i.e., for telegraphy. The word "telegraph" alone now generally refers to an electrical telegraph.
