2 How it all got started: Development of mobile telephony began in 1918 with tests of wireless telephony on military trains between Berlin and Zossen. In 1924 public trials of phone connection between trains began In 1926 the artist Karl Arnold created a visionary cartoon about the use of mobile phones In the 1940s mobile telephones for automobiles became svailable The inauguration of mobile service was on June 17, 1946 in St. Louis, Missouri During the 1960s people began the makings of mobile phones Motorola was the first company to produce a handheld mobile phone On April 3, 1973 the first mobile telephone call was made

The phone weighed 2.5 pounds It was 10 inches long, 5 inches deep, and 1.75 inches wide This prototype aloud 30 minutes of talk time and took 10 hours to re-charge

5 First Mobile Phone Call
Made on April 3, 1973 Was made from a Manhattan Street Corner- 6th Ave. between 53rd and 54th Martin Cooper made the phone call to his rival, Joel Engel, from Bell Systems Coopers exact words weren’t recorded the way Samuel Morse’s first telegraph message was, or Alexander Graham Bells first phone call, but it went something like this “I’m ringing you just to you just to see if my call sounds good on your end.” As he was walking the streets, bystanders stared in aw that he was outside walking around while talking on a hand held phone This was the start of something revolutionary

6 About Martin Cooper He was born on December 26, 1928
Graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1950 After graduating he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves where he severed as a submarine officer during the Korean War In 1957 he went on to earn his Masters degree from IIT in electrical engineering He has 11 patents in the wireless communications industry When working for Motorola Cooper conceived the first handheld mobile phone He is considered the “Father of the Cell Phone” He is the first person in history to make a handheld cellular phone call in public
