No opener today—New Notes Packet You know that there are naturally occurring Earth processes that help ecosystems maintain the materials necessary for the organisms in the ecosystem. The portion of Earth that is inhabited by life (the ____sphere) is interconnected with other Earth systems: the atmosphere ( ), the hydrosphere ( ), and the geosphere ( ). All of these systems must interact efficiently in order for an ecosystem to maintain itself! All of these systems must interact efficiently in order for an ecosystem to maintain itself!

16.1 KEY CONCEPT As the human population grows, the demand for Earth’s resources increases.

Earth’s human population continues to grow. Earth’s human carrying capacity is unknown!

What determines the carrying capacity of the world human population? What was carrying capacity? ·maximum population size that can be supported by the available resources!!!! ·Energy, water, oxygen, nutrients, etc. In order to meet the needs of humans to survive indefinitely (sustainability), we need to find a balance between us an other species!

As it reaches the carrying capacity, death rate will increase and birth rate will decrease because of: -Food: food shortages -Water: Less clean, viable water (shortage) -Soil: Less land available, fewer trees/erosion, etc! -Waste: More waste – tougher to deal with (R-R-R!!) -Pollution of Environment: more pollutants, many effects -Spread of Disease: crowding (DD), more people

Technology has helped to increase Earth’s carrying capacity.Technology has helped to increase Earth’s carrying capacity. What technology helps increase carrying capacity? What technologies influence our pressure on the earth?

The growing human population exerts pressure on Earth’s natural resources, BIG TIME!!! There are two types of resources!! 1.Renewable – Can’t be used up, able to be replenished Examples???? wind, water, sunlight less FF burning, less pollution Nuclear????

2.Non-renewable – used faster than they form Examples??? Oil, coal Need to be managed properly!

What can YOU do????? Reduce – think of ways to USE LESS! Reuse – bags, bottles, etc. Recycle – every little bit helps!! REALLY!!!

What can YOU do????? Think about packaging... 10% - 50% of products’ cost is for packaging, huge source of waste in landfills! So, how can we work on this?

What can YOU do????? It can be done, WE can do it!! WE can do it!!

Effective management of Earth’s resources will help meet the needs of the future. Earth’s resources must be used responsibly.Earth’s resources must be used responsibly. Careless use of resources makes them unavailable to future generations.Careless use of resources makes them unavailable to future generations. Think sustainability!!!!Think sustainability!!!! Easter Island is an example of irresponsible resource use.Easter Island is an example of irresponsible resource use. Cut down trees, ecosystem crashed!!Cut down trees, ecosystem crashed!!

Ecological footprint = amount of land needed to support a person …to produce & maintain… –food & water –shelter –energy –waste

The SIZE of your footprint Depends on: –amount and efficiency of resource use –amount and toxicity of waste produced

What can You do to reduce your footprint??? HMMMMM????? http:// www.myfootprint.org / http:// www.myfootprint.org /

Human Population Activity

Happy Tuesday! 9/13/11 If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten. Write a Paragraph Reflection… Your interpretation, apply it to your life…and your school…

16.2 KEY CONCEPT Fossil fuel emissions affect the biosphere, HUGELY!!

Pollutants accumulate in the air Pollution: any undesirable factor added to air, water, or soil.Pollution: any undesirable factor added to air, water, or soil. Smog (1 type of air pollution)Smog (1 type of air pollution) –sunlight interacts w/poll. in air –Poll. produced by FF emissions –made of particulates, ground-level ozone

Smog can be harmful to human healthSmog can be harmful to human health Acid rain : caused by FF emissionsAcid rain : caused by FF emissions –produced when poll. in water cycle cause rain pH to drop –can lower pH of lake/stream –can harm trees Beijing after rain Beijing smoggy day

Quick question!!!! As human population increases, why might acid rain increase??

Plants and other photosynthetic organisms maintain a balance in the atmosphere’s oxygen & carbon dioxide Plants and other photosynthetic organisms maintain a balance in the atmosphere’s oxygen & carbon dioxide N maintained by Nitrogen cycle! N maintained by Nitrogen cycle! Water levels maintained by hydrologic cycle (and filtered)! Water levels maintained by hydrologic cycle (and filtered)! What/WHO keeps the balance??

protective layer of Earth's upper atmosphere high concentrations of ozone (O 3 ) So, why do we need it? Absorbs 93-99% of sun's UV light (damages life!) Ozone layer

CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons) Used in refrigerants & aerosol cans back in the day Drift up to the atmosphere Cause a HOLE in ozone layer What would that do??? Make it hotter?Or Allow more UV rays in?

Greenhouse effect: The NORMAL warming effect when gases trap heat in the atmosphere Greenhouse gases (CO 2, O, methane, and water vapor) trap heat Greenhouse gases (CO 2, O, methane, and water vapor) trap heat Plants and photosynthetic organisms regulate! Plants and photosynthetic organisms regulate!

The greenhouse effect slows the release of energy from Earth’s atmosphereThe greenhouse effect slows the release of energy from Earth’s atmosphere methane ( CH 4 ) water (H 2 O ) carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) 1. sunlight penetrates Earth’s atmosphere 2. energy absorbed and radiated out as heat 3. greenhouse gases absorb some of it, trap it 4.Gases then radiate heat, Planet’s temp increases

One more time…PAIR SHARE!

Enhanced greenhouse effect: INCREASED WARMING of atmosphere, caused by INCREASED human impacts! FASTER RATE...YIKES!

Air pollution is changing Earth’s biosphere! levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide rise and fall over time.levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide rise and fall over time. High levels of carbon dioxide are typical of Earth’s warmer periods.High levels of carbon dioxide are typical of Earth’s warmer periods.

So, what’s GLOBAL WARMING?

Global warming refers to the trend of increasing global temperatures.Global warming refers to the trend of increasing global temperatures. North Pole

Let’s review… What is the difference between global warming and the greenhouse effect? Greenhouse effect is needed for keeping us warm, we enhance it and this causes global warming.

Let’s review… What are two ways pollution can affect the ecosystem? How does the greenhouse effect keep the earth warm? How could an increase of CO2 in the atmosphere increase global tem? Who is being affected by climate change? What causes acid rain?????

MYTHBUSTERS!!! JOT DOWN AT LEAST 10 FUN FACTS ABOUT THE EXPERIMENTS THEY DO!
