3 Navigation Definitions

4 Navigation – Class 1 Class I navigation requires the aircraft’s position be “reliably fixed” at least once each hour. “Reliably fixed” means: • Station passage of a VOR, VORTAC or NDB. • A VOR/DME, NDB/DME, VOR intersection, NDB intersection or VOR/NDB intersection, provided course guidance is available Definition Under Class I Navigation standards, Aircraft operations are conducted on any segment which is entirely within usable range of airways (service volume) of standard navigation facilities (VOR, VOR DME, NDB). Navigation on segments with a published “MEA Gap” is also considered Class b) Class I navigation requires the aircraft’s position be “reliably fixed” at least once each hour. “Reliably fixed” means: • Station passage of a VOR, VORTAC or NDB. • A VOR/DME, NDB/DME, VOR intersection, NDB intersection or VOR/NDB intersection, provided course guidance is available. 2) Approved Routes Federal airways (including AR routes). 1) Routes within controlled airspace predicated on ATC radar vectoring service. 2) Direct routes, advisory routes, and off-airways routes published or approved by ICAO based on airway navigation facilities provided: • The route is approved by ATC. • Route width and MEA criteria are observed • Required airborne and ground-based navigational facilities are operational. 3) Using En route Facilities The primary navigational reference should appear on the instruments of the Pilot Flying (PF). The Pilot Not Flying (PNF) should use his instruments in the most advantageous manner to confirm along-track progress and track alignment. CLASS I Navigation: Class I navigation is any enroute flight operation or portion of an operation that is conducted entirely within the designated Operational Services Volumes (or ICAO equivalents) of ICAO standard airway navigation facilities (VOR, VOR/DME, NDB). Class I navigation also includes enroute flight operations over routes designated with an "MEA GAP"(or ICAO equivalent). Enroute flight operations conducted within these areas are defined as "Class I navigation" operations irrespective of the navigation means used. Class I navigation includes operations within these areas using pilotage or any other means of navigation which does not rely on the use of VOR, VOR/DME, or NDB.

These operations normally involve using long range navigation systems (INS) in areas approved by Op Specs. These areas contain route segments that exceed the range of airways navigational facilities. These areas contain route segments that exceed the range of airways navigational facilities. b) Baltia may not conduct an extended overwater operation unless the airplane is equipped with the radio communication and navigation equipment necessary to comply with Two long-range navigation systems when VOR or ADF radio navigation equipment is unusable along a portion of the route. 14 CFR (a) Or CLASS II Navigation: Class II navigation is any en route flight operation which is not defined as Class I navigation. Class II navigation is any en route flight operation or portion of an en route operation (irrespective of the means of navigation) which takes place outside (beyond) the designated Operational Service Volume (or ICAO equivalents) of ICAO standard airway navigation facilities (VOR, VOR/DME, NDB). However, Class II navigation does not include en route flight operations over routes designated with an "MEA GAP" (or ICAO equivalent).

6 Class II Requirements Prior to all Class II navigation flights, Crewmembers must perform a full alignment of the navigation system. A Navigation accuracy check must be accomplished prior to Class II airspace. 8) Class II Requirements a) Prior to all Class II navigation flights, Crewmembers must perform a full alignment of the navigation system. Previous alignments cannot be accepted and crews must be aware of possible excessive drift rates with INS equipment noted by previous crews and /or maintenance. b) A Navigation accuracy check must be accomplished prior to Class II airspace. The results should be noted and logged on the Master Flight Plan (MFP). In the case of INS, a precision update may be possible over a known LAT / LONG (i.e., VOR, NDB, etc.) prior to Class II if accuracy is in doubt. c) Plotting charts. 1) /300. Post Position Plots (PPP) will be completed on Class II published and unpublished routes. • In North Atlantic operations make a PPP ten minutes or two degrees after passing each waypoint. • Northern Canada airway routes are exempt from these requirements.

7 BASIC NAVIGATION INSTRUMENTS

8 Non-directional Radio Beacon (NDB) & Automatic Direction Finder (ADF)
The simplest radio navigation aid used in aviation is a ground-based transmitter which transmits radio signals in all directions without differentiation: the Non-Directional Beacon (NDB). The counterpart instrument fitted in the aircraft is called the Automatic Direction Finder (ADF) and consists of two arials, a receiver and an indicator. A low or medium frequency radio beacon transmits nondirectional signals whereby the pilot of an aircraft properly equipped can determine bearings and “home” on the station. These facilities normally operate in a frequency band of 190 to 535 kilohertz (kHz), according to ICAO Annex 10 the frequency range for NDBs is between 190 and 1750 kHz, and transmit a continuous carrier with either 400 or 1020 hertz (Hz) modulation. All radio beacons except the compass locators transmit a continuous three-letter identification in code except during voice transmissions. When a radio beacon is used in conjunction with the Instrument Landing System markers, it is called a Compass Locator

is usable depends only on the power of the beacon. The following table gives the class of NDB stations, their power, and usable range:

10 Operational Errors of ADF
Common pilot-induced errors associated with ADF navigation include Improper Tuning & Station Identification Malfunctions of the RMI Dependence on “Homing” Poor Orientation Careless Intercept Angles Over/Undershooting predetermined Magnetic Bearings Failure to maintain selected headings Failure to understand ADF Limitations Over-controlling track corrections Failure to keep the heading indicator set / Magnetic Compass Some of the common pilot-induced errors associated with ADF navigation are listed below to help you avoid making the same mistakes. The errors are: 1. Improper tuning and station identification. Many pilots have made the mistake of homing or tracking to the wrong station. 2. Positively identifying any malfunctions of the RMI slaving system or ignoring the warning flag. 3. Dependence on homing rather than proper tracking. This commonly results from sole reliance on the ADF indications, rather than correlating them with heading indications. 4. Poor orientation, due to failure to follow proper steps in orientation and tracking. 5. Careless interception angles, very likely to happen if you rush the initial orientation procedure. 6. Overshooting and undershooting predetermined MBs, often due to forgetting the course interception angles used. 7. Failure to maintain selected headings. Any heading change is accompanied by an ADF needle change. The instruments must be read in combination before any interpretation is made. 8. Failure to understand the limitations of the ADF and the factors that affect its use. 9. Overcontrolling track corrections close to the station (chasing the ADF needle), due to failure to understand or recognize station approach. 10. Failure to keep the heading indicator set so it agrees with the magnetic compass.

11 NDB Erroneous Bearing Information
Factors which will cause erroneous readings include: Lightning Precipitation Static Distant Stations One of the disadvantages that should be considered when using low frequency (LF) for navigation is that low frequency signals are very susceptible to electrical disturbances, such as lightning. These disturbances create excessive static, needle deviations, and signal fades. There may be interference from distant stations, AS WELL. .

12 Ground waves are refracted when passing across coast lines at low angles and this will affect the indicated bearing for an aircraft tracking to seaward and following the shore line

13 Twilight/night effect.
Radio waves arriving at a receiver come both directly from the transmitter – the ground wave – and indirectly as a wave reflected from the ionosphere – the sky wave. The sky wave is affected by the daily changes in the ionosphere, read the ionisation layers section in the Aviation Meteorology Guide. Twilight effect is minimal on transmissions at frequencies below 350 kHz.

14 At night, radio beacons are vulnerable to interference from distant stations.
Nearly all disturbances which affect the Automatic Direction Finder (ADF) bearing also affect the facility's identification. Noisy identification usually occurs when the ADF needle is erratic. Voice, music or erroneous identification may be heard when a steady false bearing is being displayed. Since ADF receivers do not have a “flag” to warn the pilot when erroneous bearing information is being displayed, the pilot should continuously monitor the NDB's identification

16 VHF Omni-Directional Range (VOR)
VOR is the primary navigational aid (NAVAID) used by civil aviation in the National Airspace System (NAS). The VOR ground station is oriented to magnetic north and transmits azimuth information to the aircraft, providing 360 courses TO or FROM the VOR station. *The accuracy of course alignment of the VOR is excellent, being generally plus or minus 1 degree

When DME is installed with the VOR, it is referred to as a VOR/DME and provides both azimuth and distance information. When military tactical air navigation (TACAN) equipment is installed with the VOR, it is known as a VORTAC and provides both azimuth and distance information.

18 ENC Information IAL Information
Most VORs are equipped for voice transmission on the VOR frequency. VORs without voice capability are indicated by the letter “W” (without voice) included in the class designator (VORW). The only positive method of identifying a VOR is by its Morse Code identification or by the recorded automatic voice identification which is always indicated by use of the word “VOR” following the range's name. Reliance on determining the identification of an omnirange should never be placed on listening to voice transmissions by the Flight Service Station (FSS) (or approach control facility) involved. Many FSSs remotely operate several omniranges with different names. In some cases, none of the VORs have the name of the “parent” FSS. During periods of maintenance, the facility may radiate a T-E-S-T code (- D DDD -) or the code may be removed completely. ENC Information

19 Line of Sight Signal Transmission
VORs operate within the to MHz frequency band and have a power output necessary to provide coverage within their assigned operational service volume. They are subject to line-of-sight restrictions, and the range varies proportionally to the altitude of the receiving equipment. Therefore, its range varies in direct proportion to the altitude of receiving equipment. Generally, the reception range of the signals at an altitude of 1,000 feet above ground level (AGL) is about 40 to 45 miles. This distance increases with altitude. The intersection of two radials from different VOR stations on a chart provides the position of the aircraft.

20 VOR Station Service Volumes
Terminal & Low Altitude VOR High Altitude VOR VORs and VORTACs are classed according to operational use. There are three classes: T (Terminal) L (Low altitude) H (High altitude) Most air navigation radio aids which provide positive course guidance have a designated standard service volume (SSV). The SSV defines the reception limits of unrestricted NAVAIDs which are usable for random/unpublished route navigation. Additionally, a VOR NAVAID will be classified as restricted if it does not conform to flight inspection signal strength and course quality standards throughout the published SSV. However, the NAVAID should not be considered usable at altitudes below that which could be flown while operating under random route IFR conditions (14 CFR Section ), even though these altitudes may lie within the designated SSV. Service volume restrictions are first published in Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) and then with the alphabetical listing of the NAVAIDs in the A/FD. Standard Service Volume limitations do not apply to published IFR routes or procedures

The useful range of certain facilities may be less than 50 miles. For further information concerning these restrictions, pilots and dispatchers will refer to the Communication/NAVAID Remarks in the A/FD. The accuracy of course alignment of VOR radials is considered to be excellent. However, certain parts of the VOR receiver equipment deteriorate, and this affects its accuracy.

22 VOR Accuracy Again, the effectiveness of the VOR depends upon proper use and adjustment of both ground and airborne equipment. The accuracy of course alignment of the VOR is generally plus or minus 1°. On some VORs, minor course roughness may be observed, evidenced by course needle or brief flag alarm. At a few stations, usually in mountainous terrain, the pilot may occasionally observe a brief course needle oscillation, similar to the indication of “approaching station.” Pilots flying over unfamiliar routes are cautioned to be on the alert for these vagaries, and in particular, to use the TO/FROM indicator to determine positive station passage. VOR system course sensitivity may be checked by noting the number of degrees of change as the OBS is rotated to move the CDI from center to the last dot on either side. The course selected should not exceed 10° or 12° either side. In addition, Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 91 provides for certain VOR equipment accuracy checks, and an appropriate endorsement, within 30 days prior to flight under IFR. To comply with this requirement and to ensure satisfactory operation of the airborne system, use the following means for checking VOR receiver accuracy: 1. VOR test facility (VOT) or a radiated test signal from an appropriately rated radio repair station. 2. Certified checkpoints on the airport surface. 3. Certified airborne checkpoints.

23 VOR Test Facility (VOT)
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) VOT transmits a test signal which provides users a convenient means to determine the operational status and accuracy of a VOR receiver while on the ground where a VOT is located. Locations of VOTs are published in the A/FD. Two means of identification are used. One is a series of dots and the other is a continuous tone. Information concerning an individual test signal can be obtained from the local flight service station (FSS.) The airborne use of VOT is permitted; however, its use is strictly limited to those areas/altitudes specifically authorized in the A/FD or appropriate supplement To use the VOT service, tune in the VOT frequency MHz on the VOR receiver. With the CDI centered, the OBS should read 0° with the TO/FROM indication showing FROM or the OBS should read 180° with the TO/FROM indication showing TO. Should the VOR receiver operate an RMI, it would indicate 180° on any OBS setting. A radiated VOT from an appropriately rated radio repair station serves the same purpose as an FAA VOT signal, and the check is made in much the same manner as a VOT with some differences. The frequency normally approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is MHz; however, repair stations are not permitted to radiate the VOR test signal continuously. The owner or operator of the aircraft must make arrangements with the repair station to have the test signal transmitted station. The maximum permissible variation between the two indicated bearings is 4°. . A representative of the repair station must make an entry into the aircraft logbook or other permanent record certifying to the radial accuracy and the date of transmission. Should an error in excess of ±4° be indicated through use of a ground check, or ±6° using the airborne check, IFR flight shall not be attempted without first correcting the source of the error. No correction other than the correction card figures supplied by the manufacturer should be applied in making these VOR receiver checks. If a dual system VOR (units independent of each other except for the antenna) is installed in the aircraft, one system may be checked against the other. Turn both systems to the same VOR ground facility and note the indicated bearing to that

24 Function of VOR The VOR does not account for the aircraft heading. It only relays the aircraft direction from the station and will have the same indications regardless of which way the nose is pointing. Tune the VOR receiver to the appropriate frequency of the selected VOR ground station, turn up the audio volume, and identify the station’s signal audibly. Then, rotate the OBS to center the CDI needle and read the course under or over the index. In this Figure 360° TO is the course indicated, This would indicates Without any additional information, that the aircraft (which may be heading in any direction) is, at this moment, located at any point on the 360° radial (line from the station) The CDI will deviate from side to side as the aircraft passes over or nearly over the station because of the volume of space above the station where the zone of confusion exists. This zone of confusion is caused by lack of adequate signal directly above the station due to the radiation pattern of the station’s antenna, and because the resultant of the opposing reference and variable signals is small and constantly changing.

25 The CDI in this Figure indicates 180°, meaning that the
aircraft is on the 180° or the 360° radial of the station. The TO/ FROM indicator resolves the ambiguity. If the TO indicator is showing, then it is 180° TO the station. The FROM indication indicates the radial of the station the aircraft is presently on. Movement of the CDI from center, if it occurs at a relatively constant rate, indicates the aircraft is moving or drifting off the 180°/360° line. If the movement is rapid or fluctuating, this is an indication of impending station passage (the aircraft is near the station). To determine the aircraft’s position relative to the station, rotate the OBS until FROM appears in the window, and then center the CDI needle. The index indicates the VOR radial where the aircraft is located. The inbound (to the station) course is the reciprocal of the radial.

Typical pilot-induced errors include: 1. Careless tuning and identification of station. 2. Failure to check receiver for accuracy/sensitivity. 3. Failure to check the ambiguity (TO/FROM) indicator, particularly during course reversals, resulting in reverse sensing and corrections in the wrong direction. 5. Failure to parallel the desired radial on a track interception problem. Without this step, orientation to the desired radial can be confusing. Since pilots think in terms of left and right of course, aligning the aircraft position to the radial/course is essential. 6. Overshooting and undershooting radials on interception problems. 7. Overcontrolling corrections during tracking, especially close to the station. 8. Misinterpretation of station passage. On VOR receivers not equipped with an ON/OFF flag, a voice transmission on the combined communication and navigation radio (NAV/COM) in use for VOR may cause the same TO/FROM fluctuations on the ambiguity meter as shown during station passage. Read the whole receiver—TO/FROM, CDI, and OBS—before you make a decision. Do not utilize a VOR reading observed while transmitting. 9. Chasing the CDI, resulting in homing instead of tracking. Careless heading control and failure to bracket wind corrections make this error common.

27 Magnetic Compass FAA Instrument Flying Handbook Chapter 3
One of the oldest and simplest instruments for indicating direction is the magnetic compass. It is also one of the basic instruments required by 14 CFR part 91 for both VFR and IFR flight. A magnet is a piece of material, usually a metal containing iron, that attracts and holds lines of magnetic flux. Every magnet regardless of size has two poles: a north pole and south pole. When one magnet is placed in the field of another, the unlike poles attract each other and like poles repel. The float and card assembly has a hardened steel pivot in its center that rides inside a special, spring-loaded, hard-glass jewel cup. The buoyancy of the float takes most of the weight off the pivot, and the fluid damps the oscillation of the float and card. This jewel-and-pivot type mounting allows the float freedom to rotate and tilt up to approximately 18° angle of bank. At steeper bank angles, the compass indications are erratic and unpredictable.

The north magnetic pole to which the magnetic compass points is not collocated with the geographic north pole, but is some 1,300 miles away; directions measured from the magnetic poles are called magnetic directions. In aerial navigation, the difference between true and magnetic directions is called variation This Figure shows the isogonic lines that identify the number of degrees of variation in their area. The line that passes near Chicago is called the agonic line. Anywhere along this line the two poles are aligned, and there is no variation. East of this line, the magnetic pole is to the west of the geographic pole and a correction must be applied to a compass indication to get a true direction. Local magnetic fields in an aircraft caused by electrical current flowing in the structure, in nearby wiring or any magnetized part of the structure, conflict with the Earth’s magnetic field and cause a compass error called deviation. 30 Northerly Turning Error
FAA Instrument Flying Handbook Chapter 3 Dip Errors The lines of magnetic flux are considered to leave the Earth at the magnetic north pole and enter at the magnetic South Pole. At both locations the lines are perpendicular to the Earth’s surface. At the magnetic equator, which is halfway between the poles, the lines are parallel with the surface The magnets in a compass align with this field, and near the poles they dip, or tilt, the float and card. This dip along with this weight causes two very noticeable errors: northerly turning error and acceleration error. The pull of the vertical component of the Earth’s magnetic field causes northerly turning error, which is apparent on a heading of north or south.

31 The Effects of Acceleration Error.
FAA Instrument Flying Handbook Chapter 3 In acceleration error, the dip-correction weight causes the end of the float and card marked N (the south-seeking end) to be heavier than the opposite end. When the aircraft is flying at a constant speed on a heading of east or west, the float and card is level. The effects of magnetic dip and the weight are approximately equal. If the aircraft accelerates on a heading of east [Figure 3-21], the inertia of the weight holds its end of the float back and the card rotates toward north. As soon as the speed of the aircraft stabilizes, the card swings back to its east indication. If, while flying on this easterly heading, the aircraft decelerates, the inertia causes the weight to move ahead and the card rotates toward south until the speed again stabilizes.

33 Pilotage - Navigation by visual reference to landmarks.
“Pilotage” is navigation by reference to landmarks or checkpoints. It is a method of navigation that can be used on any course that has adequate checkpoints, but it is more commonly used in conjunction with dead reckoning and VFR radio navigation. The checkpoints selected should be prominent features common to the area of the flight. Choose checkpoints that can be readily identified by other features such as roads, rivers, railroad tracks, lakes, and power lines. If possible, select features that make useful boundaries or brackets on each side of the course, such as highways, rivers, railroads, and mountains. A pilot can keep from drifting too far off course by referring to and not crossing the selected brackets. Never place complete reliance on any single checkpoint.

35 Dead Reckoning Dead reckoning is navigation solely by means of computations. And those computations are based on your time, airspeed, distance, and direction. The products derived from these variables, when adjusted by wind speed and velocity, are heading and GS. The predicted heading takes the aircraft along the intended path and the GS establishes the time to arrive at each checkpoint and the destination. Except for flights over water, Dead Reckoning should be monitored and corrected with your pilotage skills using checkpoints – then adjusting Your calculations as necessary The heading and GS as calculated is constantly monitored and corrected by pilotage as observed from checkpoints. Dead reckoning - Navigation of an airplane solely by means of computations based on airspeed, course, heading, wind direction and speed, groundspeed, and elapsed time.

We have already discussed NDB, ADF, VOR, VOR & NDB Service volumes. Lets now take a look at additional NAVAIDS which will be utilized in the field NAVIGATIONAL AIDS

37 VOR NDB DME TACAN Types of NAVAIDs
Very high frequency omni-directional ranges (VORs) are the principal NAVAIDs that support the Victor and Jet airways. Many other navigation tools are also available to the pilot. For example, non-directional beacons (NDBs) can broadcast signals accurate enough to provide stand-alone approaches, and DME allows the pilot to pinpoint a reporting point on the airway. Though primarily navigation tools, these NAVAIDs can also transmit voice broadcasts. Tactical air navigation (TACAN) channels are represented as the two- or three-digit numbers following the three-letter identifier in the NAVAID boxes. The NACG terminal procedures provide a frequency-pairing table for the TACAN-only sites. On NACG charts, very-high frequencies and ultra-high frequencies (VHF/UHF) NAVAIDs (e.g., VORs) are depicted in black, while low frequencies and medium frequencies (LF/MF) are depicted as brown.

38 Distance Measuring Equipment (DME)
Distance measuring equipment (DME) consists of an ultra high frequency (UHF) navigational aid with VOR/DMEs and VORTACs. When used in conjunction with the VOR system, DME makes it possible for pilots to determine an accurate geographic position of the aircraft, including the bearing and distance TO or FROM the station. The aircraft DME transmits interrogating radio frequency (RF) pulses, which are received by the DME antenna at the ground facility. The signal triggers ground receiver equipment to respond to the interrogating aircraft. The airborne DME equipment measures the elapsed time between the interrogation signal sent by the aircraft and reception of the reply pulses from the ground station. This time measurement is converted into distance in nautical miles (NM) from the station.

39 Accuracy DME signals are line-of-sight; the mileage readout is the straight line distance from the aircraft to the DME ground facility and is commonly referred to as slant range distance. Slant range refers to the distance from the aircraft’s antenna to the ground station (A line at an angle to the ground transmitter. GPS systems provide distance as the horizontal measurement from the WP to the aircraft. Therefore, at 3,000 feet and 0.5 miles the DME (slant range) would read 0.6 NM while the GPS distance would show the actual horizontal distance of .5 DME. This error is smallest at low altitudes and/or at long ranges. It is greatest when the aircraft is closer to the facility, at which time the DME receiver will display altitude (in NM) above the facility. Slant range error is negligible if the aircraft is one mile or more from the ground facility for each 1,000 feet of altitude above the elevation of the facility.

40 Area Navigation (RNAV)
Area navigation (RNAV) equipment includes VOR/DME, LORAN, GPS, and inertial navigation systems (INS).

41 VOR/DME RNAV “In its simplest form, VOR/DME RNAV allows the pilot to electronically move VORTACs around to more convenient locations.” (FAA Pilot handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge) Area navigation (RNAV) permits electronic course guidance on any direct route between points established by the pilot. While RNAV is a generic term that applies to a variety of navigational aids, such as LORAN-C, GPS, and others, In this section we will deal with VOR/DME-based RNAV. VOR/DME RNAV is not a separate ground-based NAVAID, but a method of navigation using VOR/DME and VORTAC signals specially processed by the aircraft’s RNAV computer. In its simplest form, VOR/DME RNAV allows the pilot to electronically move VORTACs around to more convenient locations. Once electronically relocated, they are referred to as waypoints. These waypoints are described as a combination of a selected radial and distance within the service volume of the VORTAC to be used. These waypoints allow a straight course to be flown between almost any origin and destination, without regard to the orientation of VORTACs or the existence of airways.

42 In the VOR (or non-RNAV) mode, the unit simply functions as a VOR receiver with DME capability.
The unit’s display on the VOR indicator is conventional in all respects. For operation on established airways or any other ordinary VOR navigation, the VOR mode is used. To operate in any RNAV mode, the unit needs both radial and distance signals; therefore, a VORTAC (or VOR/DME) needs to be selected as a NAVAID. To establish a waypoint, a point somewhere within the service range of a VORTAC is defined on the basis of radial and distance. Once the waypoint is entered into the unit and the RNAV en route mode is selected, the CDI displays course guidance to the waypoint, not the original VORTAC. DME also displays distance to the waypoint. Many units have the capability to store several waypoints, allowing them to be programmed prior to flight, if desired, and called up in flight. To utilize the unit’s RNAV capability, the pilot selects and establishes a waypoint or a series of waypoints to define a course

43 Loran-C Navigation “LORAN-C absolute accuracy is excellent—position errors are typically less than .25 NM” Long range navigation, version C (LORAN-C) is another form of RNAV, but one that operates from chains of transmitters broadcasting signals in the LF spectrum. World Aeronautical Chart (WAC), sectional charts, and VFR terminal area charts do not show the presence of LORAN-C transmitters. Selection of a transmitter chain is either made automatically by the unit, or manually by the pilot using guidance information provided by the manufacturer. LORAN-C is a highly accurate, supplemental form of navigation typically installed as an adjunct to VOR and ADF equipment. Databases of airports, NAVAIDs, and ATC facilities are frequently features of LORAN-C receivers. LORAN-C absolute accuracy is excellent—position errors are typically less than .25 NM. Repeatable accuracy, or the ability to return to a waypoint previously visited, is even better. While LORAN-C is a form of RNAV, it differs significantly from VOR/DME-based RNAV. It operates in a 90–110 kHz frequency range and is based upon measurement of the difference in arrival times of pulses of radio frequency (RF) energy emitted by a chain of transmitters hundreds of miles apart.

44 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)
The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a constellation of satellites providing a high-frequency signal which contains time and distance that is picked up by a Receiver. The receiver which picks up multiple signals from different satellites is able to triangulate its position from these satellites.

45 Three GNSSs exist today: The GPS, a United States system;

GLONASS is a network of 24 satellites, which can be picked up by any GLONASS receiver, allowing the user to pinpoint their position. 2. Galileo planned to be a network of 30 satellites that continuously transmit high-frequency radio signals containing time and distance data that can be picked up by a Galileo receiver with operational expectancy by 2013. 3. The GPS came on line in 1992 with 24 satellites, and today utilizes 30 satellites.

47 The GPS system permits Earth-centered coordinates to be determined and provides aircraft position
referenced to the DOD World Geodetic System of 1984 (WGS-84). Satellite navigation systems are unaffected by weather and provide global navigation coverage that fully meets the civil requirements for use as the primary means of navigation in oceanic airspace and certain remote areas. Properly certified GPS equipment may be used as a supplemental means of IFR navigation for domestic en route, terminal operations, and certain IAPs. Navigational values, such as distance and bearing to a WP and groundspeed, are computed from the aircraft’s current position (latitude and longitude) and the location of the next WP. Course guidance is provided as a linear deviation from the desired track of a Great Circle route between defined WPs.

49 ILS Notwithstanding current & emerging RNAV technology, the ILS is the most precise and accurate approach NAVAID currently in use throughout the NAS. As with all approaches, the primary navigation responsibility falls upon the pilot in command Notwithstanding emerging RNAV technology, the ILS is the most precise and accurate approach NAVAID currently in use throughout the NAS. An ILS CAT I precision approach allows approaches to be made to 200 feet above the TDZE and with visibilities as low as 1,800 RVR; with CAT II and CAT III approaches allowing descents and visibility minimums that are even lower. As with all approaches, the primary navigation responsibility falls upon the pilot in command. ATC instructions will be limited to ensuring aircraft separation. Additionally, missed approach procedures are normally designed to diverge in order to protect all involved aircraft. ILS approaches of all types are afforded the same obstacle clearance protection and design criteria, no matter how capacity is affected by multiple ILS approaches.

50 The ILS uses a number of different ground facilities
The ILS uses a number of different ground facilities. These facilities may be used as a part of the ILS system, as well as part of another approach. For example, the compass locator may be used with NDB approaches. The localizer (LOC) ground antenna array is located on the extended centerline of the instrument runway of an airport, located at the departure end of the runway to prevent it from being a collision hazard. The localizer needle indicates, by deflection, whether the aircraft is right or left of the localizer centerline, regardless of the position or heading of the aircraft. Rotating the OBS has no effect on the operation of the localizer needle, although it is useful to rotate the OBS to put the LOC inbound course under the course index. When inbound on the front course, or outbound on the back course, the course indication remains directional.

51 The OM is located on the localizer front course 4–7 miles from the airport to indicate a position at which an aircraft, at the appropriate altitude on the localizer course, will intercept the glide path. The MM is located approximately 3,500 feet from the landing threshold on the centerline of the localizer front course at a position where the GS centerline is about 200 feet above the touchdown zone elevation. The inner marker (IM), where installed, is located on the front course between the MM and the landing threshold. It indicates the point at which an aircraft is at the decision height on the glide path during a Category II ILS approach. Compass locators are low-powered NDBs and are received and indicated by the ADF receiver. When used in conjunction with an ILS front course, the compass locator facilities are collocated with the outer and/or MM facilities. The coding identification of the outer locator consists of the first two letters of the three-letter identifier of the associated LOC. For example, the outer locator at Dallas/Love Field (DAL) is identified as “DA.” The middle locator at DAL is identified by the last two letters “AL.”

52 TERMINAL INSTRUMENT APPROACHES (TERPS)
TERPS criteria have been established for the following Instrument Procedures: Precision Approach (PAR, ILS, MLS), Non-Precision Approach (VOR, TACAN, LNAV, NDB, ASR), Approach with Vertical Guidance (LDA, LPV, VNAV), Required Navigation Performance (RNP) and for Departure Procedures (DP). The Purpose of the United States Standard for Terminal Instrument Procedures is to prescribe the criteria for the formulation, review, approval and the publishing of procedures for IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) operations to and from civil and military airports. TERPS criteria have been established for the following Instrument Procedures: Precision Approach (PAR, ILS, MLS), Non-Precision Approach (VOR, TACAN, LNAV, NDB, ASR), Approach with Vertical Guidance (LDA, LPV, VNAV), Required Navigation Performance (RNP) and for Departure Procedures (DP). The key considerations for developing Terminal Instrument Approach and Departure Procedures include but are not limited to, existing obstructions, ground/satellite based equipment, lighting and aircraft category. TERPS criteria specify the minimum measure of obstacle clearance that is considered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to supply a satisfactory level of vertical protection from obstructions and are predicated on normal aircraft operations. Understanding the complexities of Terminal Instrument Procedures is difficult since it is a highly specialized field requiring directed study and/or experience in its applications. An individual or company who has a requirement for outside expertise in this arena should engage an aviation consultant who has extensive expertise in developing innovative and workable solutions in the TERPS area of expertise.

53 CIRCLE TO LAND Approaches that do not have straight-in landing minimums are identified by the type of approach followed by a letter. Examples in this slide shows four procedure titles at the same airport that have only circling minimums. As can be seen from the example, the first approach of this type created at the airport will be labeled with the letter A, and the lettering will continue in alphabetical order. Circling-only approaches are normally designed for one of the following reasons: • The final approach course alignment with the runway centerline exceeds 30 degrees. • The descent gradient is greater than 400 feet per NM from the FAF to the threshold crossing height (TCH). When this maximum gradient is may be designed to meet the gradient criteria limits. This does not preclude a straight-in landing if a normal descent and landing can be made in accordance with the applicable CFRs.

54 Navigation (Class I and II) IFR Navigation using GPS/WASS RNAV
WASS / Wide Area Augmentation System Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) : The WAAS is designed to improve the accuracy, integrity, and availability of GPS signals. WAAS allows GPS to be used, as the aviation navigation system, from takeoff through Category I precision approaches. Unlike traditional ground-based navigation aids, WAAS will cover a more extensive service area in which surveyed wide-area ground reference stations are linked to the WAAS network.

55 Each station in the network relays the data to a wide-area master station where the correction information is computed. A correction message is prepared and uplinked to a geostationary satellite (GEO) via a ground uplink and then broadcast on the same frequency as GPS to WAAS receivers within the broadcast coverage area. The integrity of GPS is improved through real-time monitoring, and the accuracy is improved by providing differential corrections to reduce errors. As a result, performance improvement is sufficient to enable approach procedures with GPS/WAAS glide paths. At this time the FAA has completed installation of 25 wide area ground reference systems, two master stations, and four ground uplink stations. General Requirements WAAS avionics must be certified in accordance with TSO-C145A, Airborne Navigation Sensors Using the GPS Augmented by the WAAS; or TSO-146A for stand-alone systems. GPS/WAAS operation must be conducted in accordance with the FAA-approved aircraft flight manual (AFM) and flight manual supplements. Flight manual supplements must state the level of approach procedure that the receiver supports. In summary, The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has defined Standards for satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS), and Japan and Europe are building similar systems that are planned to be interoperable with WAAS: EGNOS, the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System, and MSAS, the Japanese Multifunctional Transport Satellite (MTSAT) Satellite-based Augmentation System. The result will be a worldwide seamless navigation capability similar to GPS but with greater accuracy, availability, and integrity.

56 Area navigation (RNAV) equipment includes:
Class I Navigation in US Class A Airspace using Area or Long Range Navigation Systems Area navigation (RNAV) equipment includes: VOR/DME LORAN GPS AND Inertial Navigation Systems Area Navigation (RNAV) Area navigation (RNAV) equipment includes VOR/DME, LORAN, GPS, and inertial navigation systems (INS). RNAV equipment is capable of computing the aircraft position, actual track, groundspeed, and then presenting meaningful information to the pilot. This information may be in the form of distance, cross-track error, and time estimates relative to the selected track or WP. In addition, the RNAV equipment installations must be approved for use under IFR. The Pilot’s Operating Handbook/Airplane Flight Manual (POH/AFM) should always be consulted to determine what equipment is installed, the operations that are approved, and the details of equipment use. Some aircraft may have equipment that allows input from more than one RNAV source, thereby providing a very accurate and reliable navigation source.

57 VOR/DME RNAV VOR/DME RNAV
VOR RNAV is based on information generated by the present VORTAC or VOR/DME system to create a WP using an airborne computer. As shown in this Figure, the value of side A is the measured DME distance to the VOR/DME. Side B, the distance from the VOR/DME to the WP, and angle 1 (VOR radial or the bearing from the VORTAC to the WP) are values set in the flight deck control. The bearing from the VOR/DME to the aircraft, angle 2, is measured by the VOR receiver. The airborne computer continuously compares angles 1 and 2 and determines angle 3 and side C, which is the distance in NMs and magnetic course from the aircraft to the WP. This is presented as guidance information on the flight deck display.

58 VOR/DME RNAV Function of VOR/DME RNAV
The advantages of the VOR/DME RNAV system stem from the ability of the airborne computer to locate a WP wherever it is convenient, as long as the aircraft is within reception range of both nearby VOR and DME facilities. A series of these WPs make up an RNAV route. In addition to the published routes, a random RNAV route may be flown under IFR if it is approved by air traffic control (ATC). RNAV DPs and standard terminal arrival routes (STARs) are contained in the DP and STAR booklets. ***(Sample from slide, if needed to describe) To fly a route or to execute an approach under IFR, the RNAV equipment installed in the aircraft must be approved for the appropriate IFR operations. To fly to a WP using RNAV, observe the following procedure: 1. Select the VOR/DME frequency. 2. Select the RNAV mode. 3. Select the radial of the VOR that passes through the WP (225°). 4. Select the distance from the DME to the WP (12 NM). 5. Check and confirm all inputs, and center the CDI needle with the TO indicator showing. 6. Maneuver the aircraft to fly the indicated heading plus or minus wind correction to keep the CDI needle centered. 7. The CDI needle will indicate distance off course of 1 NM per dot; the DME readout will indicate distance in NM from the WP; the groundspeed will read closing speed (knots) to the WP; and the time to station (TTS) will read time to the WP.

59 LORAN There are two types of accuracy that must be addressed in any discussion of LORAN accuracy 1 – Repeatable Accuracy 2 – Absolute Accuracy LORAN uses a network of land-based transmitters to provide an accurate long-range navigation system. (LOP). The aircraft position is determined at the intersection of two or more LOPs. Then the computer converts the known location to latitude and longitude coordinates. There are two types of accuracy that must be addressed in any discussion of LORAN accuracy. Repeatable accuracy is the accuracy measured when a user notes the LORAN position, moves away from that location, then uses the LORAN to return to that initial LORAN position. Absolute accuracy refers to the ability to determine present position in space independently, and is most often used by pilots. When the LORAN receiver is turned on and position is determined, absolute accuracy applies. Typical LORAN absolute accuracy will vary from about 0.1 NM to as much as 2.5 NM depending on distance from the station, geometry of the LOP crossing angles, terrain and environmental conditions, signal-to-noise ratio (signal strength), and some design choices made by the receiver manufacturer.

Non-RNAV DP. Established for aircraft equipped with conventional avionics using ground-based NAVAIDs. These DPs may also be designed using dead reckoning navigation. A flight management system (FMS) may be used to fly a non-RNAV DP if the FMS unit accepts inputs from conventional avionics sources such as DME, VOR, and LOC. These inputs include radio tuning and may be applied to a navigation solution one at a time or in combination. Some FMSs provide for the detection and isolation of faulty navigation information. RNAV DP. Established for aircraft equipped with RNAV avionics; e.g., GPS, VOR/DME, DME/DME, etc. Automated vertical navigation is not required, and all RNAV procedures not requiring GPS must be annotated with the note: “RADAR REQUIRED.” Prior to using GPS for RNAV departures, approach RAIM availability should be checked for that location with the navigation receiver or a Flight Service Station. SID VERSUS DP In 2000, the FAA combined into a single product both textual IFR departure procedures that were developed by the National Flight Procedures Office (NFPO) under the guidance of the Flight Standards Service (AFS) and graphic standard instrument departures (SIDs) that were designed and produced under the direction of the Air Traffic Organization (ATO). This combined product introduced the new term departure procedures (DPs) to the pilot and ATC community, and the aforementioned terms IFR departure procedure and SID were eliminated. The FAA also provided for the graphic publication of IFR departure procedures, as well as all area navigation (RNAV) DPs, to facilitate pilot understanding of the procedure. Elimination of the term SID created undue confusion in both the domestic and international aviation communities. Therefore, in the interest of international harmonization, the FAA reintroduced the term SID while also using the term obstacle departure procedure (ODP) to describe certain procedures. Non-RNAV DP. Established for aircraft equipped with conventional avionics using ground-based NAVAIDs. These DPs may also be designed using dead reckoning navigation.
