1 Welcome to Thanks for coming! Please pick up one of the supply drop off checklists (next to the door) and make sure you have all the items on the list while you wait for our session to start. Please hold onto items until after the curriculum portion then we will start the “Drop Off” portion of our evening. Any items that you may have forgotten can be sent in with your child on Wednesday. We will start our curriculum portion of the evening shortly. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. PS – If you would like to volunteer to help out in class there is a sign-up sheet on the table.

3 Daily Backpack Please check for the following daily: –Assignment Notebooks Check for behavior notes –Take Home Folder Flash Cards Math Homework Book It, Scholastic, Flyers, Permission slips etc. –Rocket Math Folder –Library Books In addition to checking your child’s backpack please make sure to check Konnect and be sure to read 15 minutes daily.

4 Need to Know –Absence If your child will be absent for any reason, you must call the school attendance line at 466-8500 Ext. 5 –Birthdays The school policy is for students to bring in non edible birthday treats. We would like to encourage you to donate a birthday book to the class that will be read during your child’s birthday celebration. This book can be new or used and will remain in the classroom. Invitations can not be handed out unless there is one for every student in the class. –Conferences Conferences will be held November 6 th & 7 th. Please sign up in the Multi-Purpose Room tonight!

5 Need to Know –Lunch Box Every day your child is responsible for bringing a lunch box to and from school. Please encourage them to keep their lunch box clean and to throw away all garbage. All lunch boxes need to be labeled with your child’s name and teacher name. –PTO If you should have questions about PTO please direct them to a PTO representative. For more information you can visit www.johnsheidlspto.comwww.johnsheidlspto.com –Recess During the warm months please make sure that your children have close toed shoes with backs on them. After a snow storm please send your child with boots, snow pants and all other snow playing attire.

6 Need to Know –Transportation Please attach your child’s transportation tag to their backpack If your child is riding home on a bus other than his/her assigned bus OR is bringing a friend home with them on the bus, we MUST have the following: –A note from you, the guardian, stating the route needed to be taken home that day. –If your child is going to another child’s house, we need two notes, one from you and one from the other child’s parent. If there is a change in your child’s transportation home during the day-please call the office and let them know. –Visitors/Volunteers All visitors/volunteers must sign in at the office and wear a visitor’s pass. I need various helpers throughout the school year. Please see the sign up sheet to help out in the classroom. Various duties may include: party helpers, xeroxing, cutting, binding, assembling math materials, etc… I will contact you on an as needed basis.

7 Reading Reading utilizes both decoding and comprehension strategies. –Shared Reading –Guided Reading –Independent Reading –Phonics Instruction Word families, short & long vowels, letter sounds, etc. –Phonemic Awareness Rhyming, segmenting, and blending

8 Writing –Fundations Program Fundations is a phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling program that aides children in becoming successful spellers. –Journals First Graders are expected to stretch out the words they are spelling-we don’t expect them to know how to spell every word. –Word Wall Each classroom will utilize a word wall featuring the most frequently used words found in print. Students will be expected to read and write these words. Please practice flash cards at home in order to support this. –Writer’s Workshop Mini Lesson/Teacher models writing Shared Writing Independent Writing Conferencing Sharing

9 Math Kaneland is using multiple tools to teach content that is outlined in the new Common Core Standards. –Some of these content areas include: Measurement Number Sense & Place Value Addition & Subtraction Skills Geometry & Time –Flexible Grouping First grade students will be placed in a 1 st grade room based on their mathematical needs. We will assess & regroup each unit based on their needs.

10 Science & Social Studies –Science topics include: Pebbles, Sand & Silt Space Solids & Liquids Health Oceans Insects –Social Studies topics include: Winter Holidays around the world Various Monthly Holidays Neighborhoods & Communities
