2 There are five different groups of animals with vertebrates. These classifications are:  Mammals  Fish  Reptiles  Birds  Amphibians

3 The Cassowary is classified as a bird because…  It has feathers  It has lungs  It lays eggs  It is warm blooded

4  It stands about 5 feet tall.  It weighs about 120 pounds.  It cannot fly.  It can sprint as fast as 40 miles per hour.  It has three toes.  It has bristly feathers.

5 The bare skin and fore- neck is blue, while the rear of the neck is red. In appearance, the Cassowary looks like a short, heavy- built, black and blue emu. Young Cassowaries are browner than adults, and have duller colored head and neck. The chicks are striped yellow and black.

6 Cassowary’s Appearance

7 Habitat  It lives in the forest floor in the tropical rainforest.  Their home is in northeastern Australia where it rains a lot.  There are lots of trees with fruit and berries.  There are many animals who also live in the rainforest.

8 Behavior & Social Habits  The Cassowary feeds mostly on fruit that has fallen to the ground.  The Cassowary will also eat anything from snails to small dead animals.  Cassowaries normally feed alone.

10   The Cassowary cannot fly it can only sprint up to 40 miles per hour.   The Cassowary is a bird that eats mostly fruit.   Females lay 3-8 large, pale green-blue eggs in each clutch.

11   The Southern Cassowary is endangered in Queensland, Australia.   The 2007 edition of the Guinness World Records lists the cassowary as the world’s most dangerous bird.   Cassowaries can grow up to 6.5 feet tall and weigh about 130 pounds.
