3 Author and Genre John Steinbeck (1902-1968) – Grew up in Salinas, CA – Attended Stanford University – Known for reflecting common man’s experiences in America and the American Dream – “Steinbeck's novels can all be classified as social novels dealing with the economic problems of rural labour, but there is also a streak of worship of the soil in his books, which does not always agree with his matter-of-fact sociological approach” (nobelprize.org). Novella written in 2 nd Person POV

4 Primary Theme Dream Deferred – What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up Like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode?
