ASPIRE is for emotional & life issues. School resources should be utilized for academic performance issues related to tutoring, learning disabilities, study skills, etc. Why Use the ASPIRE Program?

6 ASPIRE is a short-term approach for assessment, referral and/or problem resolution. FREE Telephonic Counseling Students and family members can speak to mental health professionals about personal or school-related problems or concerns. The provider will work with the students and their families to find a solution that meets their needs. 13 You can consult with a counselor on a wide range of issues: How to approach a student Communication tips Questions about the program Identifying signs/symptoms of concern Formal referral process for more serious concerns ASPIRE is a resource for STUDENTS as well as a RESOURCE FOR STAFF You can refer students to the program when you notice they may be in need. Students and their families can call ASPIRE directly to receive confidential support. All formal student referrals must be facilitated through the campus Dean of Academic Affairs. How to Use the ASPIRE Program

14 Help students stay in school and succeed to graduation by using ASPIRE for prevention & early intervention: Offer Support - Encourage students to call ASPIRE, talk to a counselor, take advantage of the resources available to them for balancing school and life. Be Proactive – Look out for signs that a student may need help: Poor performance Late assignments Frequent absences Concerning statements Pay Attention – What is the student’s reasoning for poor performance: Personal/Family issues Practical issues Life in general Crisis-related Prevention & Early Intervention

15 How could the ASPIRE Program help in these situations? Claudia turns in an assignment late for the third time. When you question why, she states that she was kicked out of her parents’ home. Bernardo misses two weeks of class. He later tells you that he was arrested for a DUI. Cynthia tells you that she may have to drop your class because she doesn’t have reliable childcare. For Example…

16 The ASPIRE Helpline is available 24/7 for urgent matters Medically trained answering service available for after-hours calls. On call counselors are available. This is not an Emergency Number. Call 911 if there is an emergency. 24/7 Helpline

19 It is difficult to determine the impact of an unexpected and traumatic event. People can respond to the same traumatic event in many different ways. In such events, ACI would have a professional counselor be readily available to help students cope. Examples Include: Death of a student/faculty/staff member Severe injury Prolonged/severe illness School violence Any traumatic event that impacts student body Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) Response
