7 CORTES conquers Aztecs in Mexico (who were ruled by a leader named Monteczuma). The Aztecs thought that Cortes was a returned God named Quetzalcoatl. Tenochtitlan was the Aztec capitol city (it is located under what is today Mexico City. Cortes burned his ships—WHY? (so there was no return home. This means conquer or die) He was helped by Spanish who had been enslaved by Mayans and a female Indian slave named Malinche who spoke Mayan and one Aztec language. She learned Spanish and was baptized with the name Dona Marina. The Spanish brought death, conquest, intermarriage (a racial group known as mestizos), crops, & animals. SPAIN

11 French explorers claimed-Canada, Great Lakes, the Mississippi River area (Louisiana) -used river as natural highway to North America -concerned with FUR TRADE and set up trading posts throughout territory -set up Indian missions (scattered, isolated) ONLY CATHOLICS COULD MIGRATE TO NEW WORLD FRENCH PROTESTANTS (HUGUENOTS) BARRED FROM FRENCH COLONIES, THEY COULD SETTLE WITH ENGLISH FRANCE

12 Relations with natives— (unlike English)  clear out forests  drive out animals  take land away USUALLY FRENCH RELATIONSHIP WITH NATIVES WAS BETTER THAN OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES  Fur Traders lived with/ married with natives  Spanish used natives as work force and nearly exterminated them through work & disease 3/4
