5 The Effects of Contact 80 to 100 % of Native American populations wiped out by European diseases (such as smallpox and measles) Why? - Native Americans were geographically cut off from these diseases - did not live in large cities or have contact w/ different people Results: - Europeans encountered fewer Native Americans = less resistance - Europeans took Native American territories with ease and made it their own
