Growth of the Colonies Colonial population grew rapidly from 1700-1750 During this time, 3 distinct regions formed:  New England  Middle Colonies  Southern Colonies These regions were different in terms of  Climate  Resources  People

Differences between the Colonial Regions New England: long winters, rocky soil, English settlers made up most of the population Middle Colonies: shorter winters, fertile soil, many immigrants from all over Europe made up the population Southern Colonies: warm climate, good soil, Africans were enslaved to work on large plantations

Spotlight: New England New England participated in three types of trade:  Trade with other colonies  Direct exchange of goods with Europe  Triangular Trade Triangular Trade was the name given to a trading route with 3 stops

Atlantic Trade New England became wealthy through trade To ensure their own economic gain, England passed the Navigation Acts in 1651

Navigation Acts The four provisions of the Navigation Acts were:  All shipping must be done in English ships or ships made in the colonies  Products such as tobacco, wood and sugar could only be sold to England or its colonies  European imports to the colonies had to pass through English ports  English officials were to tax any colonial goods not shipped to England

Response to Navigation Acts Many merchants ignored theses acts Merchants began smuggling goods to avoid paying taxes to the British

Spotlight on the Middle Colonies Many different groups settled in the Middle Colonies, often looking for religious freedom So many different groups in the area created a more tolerant society than the one in New England Religious groups, such as the Quakers, also promoted tolerance and equality of all people, including slaves & women

Growth of Cities in the Middle Colonies The physical geography of the Middle Colonies helped promote the growth of cities An abundance of rivers allowed many port cities to develop  Examples: New York & Philadelphia Port cities generated wealth through trade which led to public improvements  Graceful buildings, paved roads

Spotlight on the Southern Colonies Before the 1660s, African & European indentured servants worked the fields together During the 1660s, many indentured servants left plantations to buy their own land Landowners needed another source of labor and turned toward enslaved Africans

Southern Colonies Stats By 1750, 85% of enslaved Africans in the colonies lived in the south Enslaved Africans made up 40% of the South’s population
