12 Example1234 56789 CLIMATEPRECIPITATION QUALIFICATIONSTEMPERATURE QUALIFICATIONS Humid Tropical (Tropical Wet) (Af)Rainfall year round.Warm year round with coolest month’s average temperature above 64.4ºF. Humid Tropical Wet and Dry (Tropical Wet and Dry) (Am and Aw)Dry season in the winter or summer months.Warm year round with coolest month’s average temperature above 64.4ºF. Arid (Desert) (BWn and BWk)Almost no precipitation year roundTemperatures may vary with no more than one month’s average temperature below 32ºF. Semi-arid (Steppe) (BSn and BSk)Receives some precipitation (not enough for a surplus)Temperatures may vary... must calculate Precipitation Threshold to determine if a locale is semiarid. Humid Subtropical (Cfa)Precipitation year round.Coldest month’s average temperature is above 32ºF but below 64.4ºF; warmest month’s average is above 71.6ºF Marine (Cfb)Precipitation year round.Warmest month’s average temperature is below 71.6ºF; coldest month’s average is above 32ºF. Mediterranean (Csb)Dry season in the summer and a wet season in the winter.Coldest month’s average temperature is above 32ºF but below 64.4ºF; warmest month’s average is above 71.6ºF Humid Continental (Dfa, Dfb, Dwa, and Dwb)Precipitation year round.Coldest month’s average temperature is below 32ºF; warmest month’s average is above 50ºF Subarctic (Dfc, Dwc, Dfd, and Dwd)Precipitation year round (not large amounts).Four or less months have an average monthly temperature above 50ºF. Tundra (ET)Some precipitation (polar desert).Warmest month’s average temperature is below 50ºF but above 32ºF. Ice Cap (EF)Little precipitation. All month’s temperature averages are below 32ºF.

13 Semiarid Identification Process Step One- multiply the average annual temperature in ºC by 20. Step Two- Determining Precipitation Threshold: Take the number in Step One add 280 if 70% or more of the total precipitation is between April through September in the Northern Hemisphere (October-March in Southern). Add 140 if 30%-70%. Add 0 if less than 30%. Step Three- Determine the area’s annual precipitation in millimeters. Step Four- If the area’s annual precipitation is less than the precipitation threshold but more than half the precipitation threshold then it is a semiarid climate.

14 Limon, Colorado Step One- 8.3ºC x 20 = 166 Step Two- 80% of the rainfall falls between April to September 166 + 280 = 446 is the Precipitation Threshold Step Three- 14 inches = 355.6 millimeters Step Four- 355.6 is less than 466 and more than half of 466...thus making Limon, Colorado a semiarid climate classification.
