2 Purpose Identify and adapt the qualities that characterize high-performing organizations in higher education institutions. What do a variety of educationally effective colleges and universities to do to promote student success?

3 Overview of Research Study conducted from Fall 2002 through Spring 2004 by a National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) Institute research team Case studies of 20 high-performing colleges and universities, including large, small, urban, and special mission institutions. Schools selected for the study had higher-than-predicted graduation rates and higher than-predicted scores on the five NSSE clusters of effective educational practice:  Level of academic challenge,  Active and collaborative learning,  Student interaction with faculty members,  Enriching educational experiences, and  Supportive campus environment. Results of the study were published by the American Association for Higher Education in Spring 2005 Student Success in College: Creating Conditions That Matter.

8 Discussion On the 2005 National Survey of Student Engagement, SCSU scored lower than the national norm in four of the five areas: Level of Academic Challenge, Student-Faculty Interaction, Enriching Educational Experiences, and Supportive Campus Environment. Ideas?

9 Individual Exercise Consider how you do or will focus on student learning or create clear pathways to success in your position. Identify one strategy or initiative for fostering student success at SCSU. Identify how you can participate in existing programs or with whom you could work to develop a new initiative.
