4 The Internet is a global system network, that consists of ‘minor’ networks (LANs or WANs). This allows users to access information from other users from different networks who upload the information. The internet can be accesses through any device, that is connected to the internet such as: * Phones * Computers * Gaming consoles Content Page Next Page Previous Page

5 * The Internet is not owned by anyone as it contains intellectual property of other people. This is a public property and so can not be owned by anyone. * But countries do have the right to control what sites can be shown or not shown. 6 A computer can be connected to the Internet using two methods which are: 1. Connecting to the Internet using ModemModem 2. Connecting to the Internet using BroadbandBroadband But there are various items needed first to access anyone of these methods in order to connect to the Internet. 7 * Transmission Control Protocol: This is a core protocols which provide reliable and ordered delivery of bytes from one program to another program from a different computer. * World Wide Web: This is a system which consists of interlinked HTML documents which can be accessed through the use of Internet.HTML * Browser: This is a software application for retrieving, presenting and transferring information through the World Wide Web. * Internet address: This is also known as the internet protocol address and is a numerical label which is assigned to each device such as a computer or a printer. * Web Address: This specifies a certain site, which when typed, will be directed to. 8 * Surfing the web: This term is generally used when a person is visiting from one webpage to another. * Finding information using dictionary services: This is when online dictionaries such as Google dictionary, is used to find what a term means. * Finding information using a web address: This is when the user specifies the particular website in order to retain information. * Finding information using search engines: This is when search engines such as Yahoo are used, which re-directs a user to websites which may have the information required. * Finding information using a Web Bot: This is when a user can use an online robot to search the information for him/her.
