4 But aren’t apprenticeships designed for the trades………carpenters and sparkies? There is a national recognition of the need to overcome the wide spread skill shortages being experienced across the country. To help the nation build its skills the Australian Apprenticeship system is now extended well beyond the ‘traditional trades’.

6 So what is an Australian Apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is a training contract between an employer and an employee in which the employer provides training and the apprentice learns an occupation or trade An apprenticeship is a training contract between an employer and an employee in which the employer provides training and the apprentice learns an occupation or trade The third party in an apprenticeship is the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) who may be a TAFE or private RTO. The RTO manages the training and assessment process and finally awards the national qualification that is at the heart of the apprenticeship The training to support an apprenticeship can be provided both on- the-job and off-the-job (and a blend of the two) and it is important that the employer provides useful opportunities for the apprentice to build his or her skills in a safe environment The training to support an apprenticeship can be provided both on- the-job and off-the-job (and a blend of the two) and it is important that the employer provides useful opportunities for the apprentice to build his or her skills in a safe environment In return the employer has the opportunity to ‘grow’ his or her own staff and pass on practical industry skills and knowledge In return the employer has the opportunity to ‘grow’ his or her own staff and pass on practical industry skills and knowledge
