Planning Your Career Figure out what you want to do Identify the education, training, and/or experience you need to be able to do it Start planning how you will acquire the education, training, and/or experience you will need

What Are Your Interests, Aptitudes, & Abilities? Figure out what kinds of things you enjoy doing – Helping people – Solving problems – Etc. – This may point you in the direction of a specific career Take a career test – Virginia Wizard offered through the Guidance Department – Others

Setting Goals & Priorities Once you set goals, look at your priorities – How important is goal to you? – Should you plan your coursework around it? – Is it worth your precious free time to explore? If you set your priorities to meet your goal Each step toward goal should be another rung up the career ladder

Going to College You may have career in mind and know what degree you need to pursue that career If not, take some courses that may interest you – You may discover an area of study and career that you would like

Non-College Job Training Trade School – Focused on specific skill-based career Auto mechanic Welder Etc. – Can be only a few weeks to several years Apprenticeships – Learning period of up to 5 years & may include additional course work at night – Work at job and learn that trade from experienced employees in that field

Internships, Apprenticeships, and Cooperative Education Internship – Work at job in your field of study – May or may not get paid – Way to build work experience in that field as you learn Apprenticeship – Work at job for which you received training – Normally paid Cooperative Education – College student does combination of classwork and full-time work at a job in their career area – Normally paid

Paying for Your Education or Training Grants & scholarships available to qualified applicants Grants & scholarships from college or training program Student loans from financial institutions Student loans from the government – Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Coverdale Education Savings Accounts State education savings plans – Virginia 529 College Savings Plan Virginia 529 College Savings Plan
