Resource Conservation Program November 2003 Kelley Gonzales Resource Conservation Manager

November 2003 2 Program Announcement TO: All University Faculty, Staff and Administration FROM: Fran Schoneck DATE: March 9, 2004 RE: Energy and Resource Conservation It is the policy of the State of Colorado and our university that every employee is responsible for sensible control of our electric, gas and water utility consumption. While primacy focus of our energy and resource conservation program will be upon ensuring that our facilities are properly controlled outside of classroom hours, each of us will be expected to do our part to conserve. Simply put, if you need it, use it, otherwise make certain it is off. Ms. Kelley Gonzales has been selected to serve as our Resource Conservation Specialist. Ms. Gonzales’ many responsibilities will include working with university employees at every level to establish a university wide culture of conservation intended to protect the comfort of the instructional day while minimizing utility related waste. She will be responsible for developing an accounting database that will allow each building’s progress to be accurately and fairly traced and reported. Finally, she will be performing building visits before, during and after class hours, intended to find opportunities for further savings and to document support for the program. Savings from this program will largely be directed towards our building systems upgrades, but savings above and beyond the minimum goals will be available for use within our campus community. I want to personally encourage each of you to do your part to support this most worthwhile project.

November 20033 Mission To promote the efficient use of all resources available to the Campus while providing a safe and comfortable environment for living, learning, and working

November 20034 Goals  To reduce the usage of water, electricity, and natural gas  Implement Federal, State, and local government resource policy guidelines  To provide reliable and affordable resources  Long term resource conservation & utility systems planning & guidelines  Long term stewardship for Colorado’s resources and move toward a more sustainable campus

November 2003 5 Work Completed Campus wide Energy Audit Installation of energy saving light bulbs Installation of low flow water fixtures Creation of a new Resource Conservation Manager position

November 2003 6 Work in Progress Introduce program to departments and organizations on Campus Implementation of a Campus awareness and behavior modification program Temperature set backs for buildings during unscheduled times of day, week, and Holidays Resource conservation web site Design & Construction of a second phase of the performance contract project

November 2003 7 Work in Progress Cont. Start a de-lamping program, reduce illumination in areas where customer’s feel it is too bright On-line access to electric and gas usage data Energy management program for computers and office equipment Assess areas on campus that could benefit from other forms of lighting control; such as photocells, motion sensors, increased switching options. Work with custodial staff to assist in daily operation of lighting and some HVAC control.

November 2003 8 Future Expand non-potable water irrigation system Recognition/Reward program for conservation efforts Identify external sources of energy conservation funding and grants Research alternative energy sources for pilot programs Rate each building according to Energy Star index

November 2003 9 Future Continued Educate and encourage faculty and staff on energy efficient purchases Collect and exchange data and best practices information from other schools (all levels) Look at building scheduling efficiencies Student education program Report program progress to the campus community

November 2003 10 Conservation Checklist Lighting: *All staff should know where all lighting control is located in their assigned buildings including all common areas, classrooms, offices, display cases, etc… *Light only those areas that you are working in. Lighting should be off except egress lighting in all other areas including hallways. *Always turn off any lighting left on in any unoccupied spaces and when you have left the area. *Always replace bulbs that are out with the new T8 tubes or compact fluorescent bulbs. *Report to your supervisor and to conservation@unco.edu any malfunctioning lighting, lighting that is repeatedly on when it should not be, etc…conservation@unco.edu *Turn off or half switch any day lighted areas. HVAC: *Building set backs will be in effect during the evenings, weekends, and non-scheduled days. You should already be aware that many spaces you are working in are currently set back. *Contact your supervisor and conservation@unc.edu if any spaces seem unusually warm or cold.conservation@unc.edu *The use of space heaters is not desirable. Please turn off any space heaters left on and report to your supervisor and conservation@unc.edu.conservation@unc.edu Computers and Office Equipment: *All office equipment and computers are to be off during evenings, weekends, and non-scheduled days. Contact your supervisor and conservation@unc.edu for any equipment that is repeatedly left on.conservation@unc.edu You are the eyes and ears of the buildings and your support and help are very important to this program’s success!
