Biology Project-Air pollution Group members: Chan Hang Kei (1) Chiu Man Fung (8) Kwan Wai Ki (11) Ngai Po Shing (15) Tse Man Ho (19) Yeung Wut Pan (22)

Sources of air pollution Transport Motor vehicles like cars and marine vessels, like container ships or cruise ships produce air pollutants. Also, the problem is worsen because of traffic congestion, use of poor- quality diesel and vehicles without proper maintenance.

Domestic activities The use of foaming agent, cleaning agent, sprays and cooling agent like freon contains CFC’s, which destroy the ozone layer.

Industrial activities The exhaust fumes from factories, oil refining, power plant operation and the burning of fossil fuels also release air pollutants. i.e. sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon particles Oil refining fossil fuels Lamma Island Power Station

Waste incineration As we produce different kinds of rubbish every day, landfill sites can not fulfill our needs. Therefore, waste incineration is a common way of rubbish treatment. It gives out toxic gases and air pollutants. Kwai Chung Incineration Plant

Carbon dioxide Carbon dioxide exhausted from vehicles and factories is absorbed by the plants for photosynthesis. But if there is too much carbon dioxide,it cannot be absorbed completely. The high concentration of carbon dioxide will result in greenhouse effect. Effects of air pollution

Greenhouse effect Greenhouse effect is caused because of the trapped sunlight in the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide blocks all the sunlight inside and the heat cannot be lost.

The ice in the poles will melt and most of the coastal areas will be flooded. The living of animals and plants are also being threatened. Greenhouse effect will increase the global temperature.

Acid Rain Air pollution of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide will dissolve in rain and produce acid rain. The acid rain destroys habitats and upsets the ecosystem.Besides, acid rain also corrode buildings.

Measures to solve the problems of air pollution in Hong Kong The main governmental department which is responsible for pollution issues is the Environmental Protection Department (EPD). The EPD is the government link to clear air. Their anti-Air Pollution Web pages and publications are informative. Moreover, people are welcome to report polluters so that the EPD can take action. 1.Governmental Department

2. Planning Better planning to relocate stationary sources of air pollution away from the main urban areas and to guide the development projects has been used in Hong Kong. 3. Legislation Air Pollution Control Regulations are used to control the pollution from stationary sources. Air Quality Control Zones are designated around the Harbour, Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung.

Free advice is given on how to control pollution for factories. Environmental education to citizens is promoted through schools and mass media. Air Pollution Index (API) are provided to public. 4. Advice and education

Suggestion to the HKSAR Use the natural gas to generate the electricity Encourage citizens using public transports rather than using private cars Plants more trees Encourage drivers to use environmental-friendly fuel instead of bad quality fuel Encourage citizens to buy electricity appliances with energy efficiency label Held talks with the mainland China on the controlling the air pollutants from the Zhujiang Delta
