7 INTERNET SAFETY AT SCHOOL Students use the Internet only for educational and research purposes Teachers monitor student internet use in class Students are not allowed “free time” to search the internet Students receive training on use of device and internet safety

8 INTERNET SAFETY GUIDELINES Never give out personal information Never use parents’ credit card online Never share passwords with anyone Never arrange a face-to-face meeting Don’t open and e-mail if you don’t know who sent it Don’t click on banner ads or pop up ads on websites Never use bad language or send threatening e-mail

9 SCHOOL INTERNET FILTERING Filtering technology is used by the district and provided from the district’s ISP This is a requirement that the school district provide for state and federal requirements

12 HOME INTERNET USE Parents should set and enforce rules for internet and phone use Have a computer in a common room (not a bedroom with the door closed!) Time limit on the internet, instant messaging, social networking site, online gaming, etc. Parents should ask and know student’s personal username and password Parents should have access to student’s email Check your student’s browsing history. If the history is empty, ask why!

13 SOCIAL MEDIA Parents should monitor social media use even though it is blocked by the district. Many students have access via a SmartPhone. Be aware of which social media sites your students use (Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Facebook, SnapChat, Tumblr, etc.) and monitor their postings. Talk with your kids about their permanent digital footprint. Be alert to any cyber-bullying and notify school immediately if it involves another student. Parents should ask and know student’s personal username and password for social media sites.

15 RESPONSIBLE USE POLICY Follow all copyright laws (Music Piracy) Use appropriate language online Students will make available all messages or files upon administrator or teacher request. Just like a textbook or a locker, HCDOE owns the laptop. Students are permitted to use it for educational advancement. Administrators have the capability to remotely view student computers.

16 WHAT IS PROHIBITED? Bypassing the filter Using another student’s username or password Sharing passwords Downloading or installing Tampering with the hardware Chatrooms, instant messaging, social networking sites, hosting non-school approved web pages.

17 WHAT IS PROHIBITED? Inappropriate material: Materials that are unacceptable in a school setting Pornographic, obscene, graphically violent, vulgar Music, sounds, language, videos, or other materials Do not download or transfer through an external drive.
