3 KNOW YOUR GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS All students must have ____ credits to graduate 4 years of _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (including 1 semester of Speech) 3 years of _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 1 semester of Economics 3 years of _ _ _ _ (including Algebra II Advanced Functions) 3 years of Science (including 1 year of each: Biology, Chemistry, Physics) 1 semester each of Foundations of Fitness I, Foundations of Fitness II, Health and Reading 1 year of Fine Arts

4 KNOW YOUR GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS All students must pass the GRAD Standards Tests in: Writing – 9th grade Reading – 10th grade Math – 11th grade Students planning to attend a 4-year college should know that many schools require to take 2 years of a _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _, within the same language, for admission.

6 THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP… Open the Career Course Resource Guide to “Which Path Matches Your Interests and Abilities” There are 6 Career Path Descriptions On the next 5 slides, you can answer questions to see what career area is of most interest to you…

7 Are you a... CREATOR? Do you like to work in unstructured situations where you can use your creativity and come up with new ideas. Do you enjoy performing and the visual arts? IF SO, GO TO ARTS AND COMMUNICATIONS.

8 Are you a… PERSUADER? Do you like to work with other people? Do you enjoy influencing, persuading and performing? Do you like to lead? Do you tend to be assertive and enthusiastic? IF SO, GO TO BUSINESS and MANAGEMENT.

9 Are you a… THINKER (and a HELPER)? Do you like to watch and learn and analyze problems? But, do you also like to work directly with people rather than things? Do you like math and science? IF SO, GO TO HEALTH SERVICES.

10 Are you a… HELPER? Do you like to work with people rather than things? Do you enjoy training, instructing, counseling and curing others? IF SO, GO TO HUMAN SERVICES.

11 Are you a… DOER? Do you like to work with things like machines, tools or plants? Do you like to work with your hands? Are you practical and good at solving problems? IF SO, GO TO ENGINEERING, MANUFACTURING & TECHNOLOGIES or AGRICULTURE and NATURAL SCIENCE.

12 THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP… Once you’ve picked a career path of most interest to you, open the Career Course Resource Guide completely. Look at the 9th and 10th Grade suggested electives. Consider taking some of these classes when you start registering for 10th grade on January 29, 2013.

13 MAKE GOOD CHOICES Register Carefully - Take challenging courses in core academic subjects. Consider Honors classes. Use your support classes, teachers and staff. Do Your Work – Write in your planner, do the work you are assigned, learn to study for tests. Consider asking a teacher what you can do to be more successful.

14 MAKE GOOD CHOICES Get Help – If you are having difficulties, don’t give up. Get help from a teacher, tutor or mentor. Consider going to the Math Resource Room, the Foreign Language tutors, the after school tutoring on Tuesdays and Wednesdays…

15 MAKE GOOD CHOICES Get Counseling – Know your school counselor at JM. Consider meeting with that person to talk about being “on track” to graduate. Last Names of A-F – Ness Last Names of G-L – Carstensen Last names of M-R – Cox Last Names of S-Z – Sorensen

16 MAKE GOOD CHOICES Get Active - Stay involved in your school or in your community. Consider volunteering or working. Look Ahead – Work with your parent(s)/guardian(s) to go to www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov and start your financial aid profile. Consider saving for college or for your plans after high school.

17 LEARN ABOUT NEW OPPORTUNITIES Honors Classes There are 27 Honors classes or options @ JM Students need 12 Honors credits to get an Honors Diploma @ JM Ms. Cobb in Counseling Office is the contact person for Honors

18 LEARN ABOUT NEW OPPORTUNITIES Advanced Placement Classes (AP) There are 11 AP classes @ JM You can take an exam at the end of the class, earn a qualifying grade and potentially get college credit

19 LEARN ABOUT NEW OPPORTUNITIES Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) Juniors and seniors can take classes at RCTC PSEO students can earn college credit while in high school Students must: have a qualifying GPA (3.0 for juniors, 2.5 for seniors) qualify for class rank (at/above 66th percentile for juniors and at/above 50th percentile for seniors) be on track to graduate
