Welcome to AP Physics! Pick up Safety Contract, Calculator Contract and index card. While waiting, compose a cinquain or haiku describing what you think physics is. Write it on one side of index card. Include name and period on other side. Cinquain: –Title 2 syllables –Describe title 4 syllables –State an action6 syllables –Express a feeling8 syllables –Another word for title2 syllables Haiku: –5 syllables –7 syllables –5 syllables

Welcome to Physics! calculator contract: complete both sides. Your calculator number is your seat number. You will use this all year! Take this card home and have your folks sign it. Return it by Wednesday. safety review: This should be completed by Wed Sept 3. You may use the class copy of safety rules and begin working on this while waiting for class to start.

Syllabus and Policies Supplies –Pencil, pens, & paper –Folder, spiral, or 3 ring binder –Scientific Calculator at home The policies and syllabus are on my website. Check it out, have your folks check it out, then parents need to sign course procedures receipt (on back of calculator contract). Bring this back by Wednesday. What about books?

Expectations Tardies –Door closes at bell. You will need to go to Tardy Station Digital Toys –They are to be off and put away unless we are using them. Classroom decorum –Politeness –Preparedness –Honesty –See and Do!!!! –Don’t sharpen pencils when I am speaking –Put stuff away (chairs, lab supplies, trash) –This is not a restaurant. NO FOOD or DRINKS –Don’t lose your papers: one copy only –Stay seated until I dismiss you Pet Peeve

8/26 Work on Safety Review and Math Review Turn in contracts to blue sorter (file under first letter of your last name) Change problem 1 and 2 on Math Review to: 1) 18/2x3 = 2) 2(14-3 2 ) =

Let’s talk about feet…… FOOT LAB!!!!
19
How many feet: Presentation Create a report and present it to the class when called upon. I will ask you 3 questions. What was your method for getting the measurement? This will include a diagram. How did you maximize the precision? What is the usefulness of your measurement for someone going to the hardware store to buy a rope the same length as the distance across the room?
20
Accuracy and Precision The Goal Measure the width of the hall as precisely as you can using “feet” as your units of measurement. Resources Strip of adding machine tape Your foot
21
12.9 ft which is the same as 12ft 11 in
22
What is the difference between accuracy and precision? Accuracy is the real deal; the truth; the accepted value Precision has two meanings: –How repeatable the measurements are (range) –How small the interval of measurement is In the foot lab, what aspect of precision was being investigated? What do you think the goal is in science regarding accuracy and precision?
23
Which is more precise? AB
24
A B

8/27 Have Math WS out Turn in any forms to front desk
26
More measurement….looking for relationships
27
Order of Operations When there is more than one operation involved in a mathematical problem, it must be solved by using the correct order of operations. Remember, calculators will perform operations in the order which you enter them, therefore, you will need to enter the operations in the correct order for the calculator to give you the right answer.

36
Why Scientific Notation? It makes it easier to work with very large and very small numbers.
37
Given the following: 2.00 x 10 4 The first part is called the coefficient (the 2.00). The second is called the base (x 10) and exponent ( 4 ). Proper scientific notation requires the coefficient to be between 1 and 9. The base is always x10. If the exponent is positive, the number is greater than 1 and the decimal is moved to the right as many times as the exponent to convert to standard form. If the exponent is negative, the number is less than 1 and the decimal is moved to the left as many times as the exponent to convert to standard form. Use the EE key – not the carot!
38
Record the following in Scientific Notation 685,003 kg 6.85 x 10 5 kg 407,501,000 sec 4.08 x 10 8 sec 0.00621 m 6.21 x 10 -3 m 0.00000000697 N 6.97 x 10 -9 N
39
8/28 FIRST: Pick up both pages at the front desk. You will complete these in class today after some notes. SECOND: solve for x12/x = 36
40
Record the following in Standard Form 4.35 x 10 6 m 4,350,000 m 2.19 x 10 3 N 2,190 N 2.19 x 10 -3 kg 0.00219 kg 4.57 x 10 -6 s 0.00000457 s

8/29 It’s Friday, It’s Friday! Get a calculator Pick up all 3 pages at front The short dim analysis ws is what we are working on today The long dim analysis ws is your review for next Thursday’s test. There will also be safety questions on the test. NOW: If you have 6,230 cm, how many –Km? –mm? –Dm?
52
Metric Mania WS Look at the ladder If you are going down the ladder you add places (ie move the decimal right) If you are going up the ladder you subtract places (ie move the decimal left)

Converting up on down the metric system using dimensional analysis What do you have? What do you have? What do you want? What do you want? Is your answer going to be larger or smaller than the starting number? Is your answer going to be larger or smaller than the starting number? What do you know? What do you know? Remember you must be able to cancel out all units except the one you want to end up withRemember you must be able to cancel out all units except the one you want to end up with
57
Step 1 Write down the number and unit that you are starting withWrite down the number and unit that you are starting with
58
Step 2 Find out how to arrive at your final unit by using known conversion factorsFind out how to arrive at your final unit by using known conversion factors

Example Convert 5 m into km:Convert 5 m into km: Step 1: you start with 5 m Step 2: you need to get to km Step 3: you know that: 1km = 1000 m Step 4: 5 m X 1km = 1000 m 0.005m **Always multiply every number across the top, then multiply every number across the bottom. Finally divide the product of the top by the product of the bottom. Record number and unit.

You are an incredibly valuable employee. Your boss wants to reward you so she offers you two options. You can either work 10 days straight and receive one million dollars or you can earn a dollar per second up to one million dollars. You would like to buy an elite condo in the Bahamas that costs exactly one million dollars. Which deal will allow you to purchase the condo first? (Assume that you work every second of every day in both cases.) Your boss is in a hurry to a meeting so you only have five minutes to decide. Which do you choose?
