Year 6 2014-2015 WELCOME

 The Staff working in our year group this year are: Mr Rimmer - Class Teacher  Mrs Ashcroft -Teaching Assistant  Mrs Bradshaw – Teaching Assistant  Mrs McSweeney Cleaner

 To help you visualise your child at school;  To meet the teacher working with your child;  To become aware of the routines and expectations of this year.  To discuss the basic content of the curriculum for the class.

 We are still following the ‘old’ National Curriculum for Numeracy, (Mathematics), Literacy and Science.  Children in Year 6 will be tested and given a level in Literacy and Numeracy by the Sats in the Summer.  As time progresses the curriculum will change to meet the New National Curriculum requirements.

 Autumn Term - ‘Merseybeat’  Spring Term - ‘World War 2’  Summer Term – ‘Africa’  Literacy and different subjects are linked together to support the development of the children’s learning.  ICT is also used to develop the themes but we also include teaching Internet Safety and other relevant themes linking to the new curriculum.

 We have high expectations of children in relation to following our rules and code of conduct, ‘It’s Good to Be Green’.  We would like your support in helping your child to take responsibility for their own behaviour.  We believe that it is vital for staff and parents to work together in ensuring a consistent approach to dealing with children's behaviour.

 We will be encouraging all children to take great pride in their work;  All children will learn how to present their work and will be expected to maintain these standards throughout the year in all curriculum areas.  Homework should be presented as though it is a piece of class work.

 All children are expected to wear GPS uniform at all times, shirts are tucked in, top buttons are done up and ties are worn neatly.  Sensible black school shoes should be worn.  School PE kits with pumps (or trainers).  They should come in dressed in PE kit and school track suits on Wednesdays.

We have high expectations of all the children in Year 6 as the eldest members of our school especially with their:  Behaviour;  Presentation of Work;  Uniform;  P.E Kit;  Punctuality;  Homework;

 Homework will be set on Monday to be returned by Friday.  It will be Numeracy or Literacy homework and Spellings.  We trust that each child will read regularly at home and keep a regular reading record.  We encourage you to support your child in completing their homework. Please sign all homework.  If your child finds something difficult, please make sure you let me know.

 There are many opportunities to learn outside the classroom, including class visits and after school clubs.  Currently, we are hoping to arrange a visit to the ‘Beatles Story Liverpool’, ‘West Wirral Works – City Learning Centre’ and other venues.

At GPS, we report to parents on a frequent basis:  Parents’ Evenings;  Newsletter;  Interim and full end of year reports;  Informal discussions before and after school.  By letter  Discussion and arrangements individually.

We really hope that your child enjoys their time in Year 6 and that they really achieve their best in class. We thank you for your support of your children in so many ways. THANK YOU for giving up your time to find out more about Year 6 and what we do at GPS!
