In 2011, there were 146,600 regional businesses which in 2012 increased by 2% to 150,050. Approximately 8% of the businesses in England are situated in the region. The regional GVA in 2011 was £91,044 million; again 8% of the national figure. “Gross Value Added” is an economic measure of the value of goods and services produced in an area. Regional exports to the European Union increased by 20%. Exports to North America increased by 13%; compared to a national increase of 5%. Source: HM Revenue & Customs
