Marc Chagall Marc Zaharovich Chagall, was a Russian- French artist associated with several major artistic styles and one of the most successful artists of the 20th century. He was an early modernist and created works in virtually every artistic medium, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art prints.

Marc Chagall Marc Chagall, born Moishe Shagal was born in Liozna near the city of Vitebsk (Belarus, then part of the Russian empire in 1887. Chagall was the eldest of nine children. His father was employed by a herring merchant and his mother sold groceries from their home. Marc was the oldest son and bore great responsibilities at bore great responsibilities at home. home.

Marc Chagall Marc loved to draw more than anything else, including doing his school work! The Rabbi at Marc’s school was not happy either. The Rabbi soon realized that this young boy had a special gift in art. A gift for drawing not what he saw, but for drawing the very spirit of things.

Marc Chagall The Rabbi spoke to Marc’s parents and he soon began studying with a local painter. Marc soon outgrew his painting teacher in Vitebsk. He wanted to go to St. Petersburg but he wasn’t allowed because he was Jewish. So he pretended to be his friends Butler at his home in St. Petersburg. He didn’t tell anyone he was Jewish and visited all the great museums and galleries.

Marc Chagall Once he had learned all he could in Russia a friend helped him get to Paris he was 25 years old. Paris was full of new ideas and groups of artists but he never joined any of them he preferred to be his own artist. By the time he had been in Paris 4 years he was a well known artist.

Marc Chagall Chagall returned to Russia and then married his fiancé Bella. They returned to Paris but as World War II was starting it wasn’t safe and they moved to New York City in America. Once the war was over Chagall returned to France to live the rest of his life painting.

Marc Chagall Marc Chagall lived until he was 97 years old. He painted, designed stage sets, made stained glass and designed tapestries and all with success. His paintings focused on his life his love and bringing optimism and light to life.
