American behavior about finding answers to questions People ask per day an average of 4 questions that require an outside source Americans have not yet found an ideal information resource; no participants said they would use the same resource time and again More than 31 percent use Internet search engines to find answers; they often express frustration, however, because they estimate that half of their searches are unsuccessful. Quoted from http://www.keen.com/documents/corpinfo/pressstudy.asp

Trends… The overall demand for quality metadata has dramatically increased Accelerating adoption of Internet technology More and more libraries worldwide, requiring authoritative electronic metadata Emergence of library portals Looming library staffing shortages Increased competition from the private sector for skilled librarians Focus on enhancing access to the unique local collection Changing measures: demonstrate effectiveness
11
Metadata …
12
Demystifying metadata Its information about information Metadata is created by all librarians What do reference librarians use? What do bibliographic instruction librarians use? What do subject selectors use? Metadata? Cataloging?
13
Why metadata? Improves discovery and navigation Enables retrieval Supports administration
14
Why consider Dublin Core? You have a rich standard, but need a simpler one You want to reveal your data to other communities (via the web) using commonly understood semantics You want to provide unified access to databases with different underlying schemas You need core description semantics and dont feel compelled to invent them anew
15
CORC …
16
A familiar approach Cooperation among libraries to... Enhance and expand access Provide faster access to materials Minimize duplication of effort Integrate with local resources Ensure currency
17
Reasons for CORC Develop automated tools optimized for the description of web-based items Enhance access to the unique local collection Assist libraries to participate in emerging digital global network Extend and expand the WorldCat shared cooperative cataloging model to electronic resources Expand metadata formats within WorldCat to include additional resource communities
18
CORC tool set… Featuring… Automated metadata extraction and record creation MARC, Dublin Core, and more formats to come Automated heading verification dynamically linked authority control URL maintenance If selected, libraries are alerted to broken, redirected URLs WebDewey TM (by subscription) Mapped to LC subject headings Digital pathfinders
19
CORC… pathfinder tool set *path·find·er (pthfndr, päth-) n. One that discovers a new course or way, especially through or into unexplored regions. (www.dictionary.com) Electronic subject bibliography (OCLC) Creation methods From scratch Search the database Clone existing pathfinder Harvest a web page
20
CORC… pathfinder tool set Features... integrate physical and digital resources dynamic search capability control access to licensed resources URL maintenance Benefits... Integration of resources Showcase your finest resources Shared reference services Shared link maintenance, catalog updates Streamline creation, maintenance
21
CORC benefits Cooperative effort Source for authoritative metadata Standards based Multiple formats Librarian-selected resources Leverage your unique local collection Distributed resource description
