Share  Share with your team  Who can get them all correct?  Go in alphabetical order by 1 st name  10 minutes

We will share  Each day a new team will share the truths and lies and the class will try to figure them out

Cup Challenge To begin, set your cups up like this

Next, using ONLY the rubberband and string,  move the cups from this structure to a pyramid with three cups on bottom, then two cups then one on top

Evidence:  On page 3 of your “journal” answer the following  Was your team successful in working together to make the pyramid?  Why or why not?

Objective: SWBAT explain what makes a class run smoothly Thursday, Aug 20 Warmup:  Thinking back to yesterday, what will be necessary for this class to run smoothly?  Write down 3 statements on page 3 in journal.

Objective: SWBAT explain what makes a class run smoothly Discuss:  Random picking on you based on sticks!  Create list

Syllabus  Read through it with elbow partner (older person begins)  Write 3 things that “speak to you” in your journal page 3  ONLINE,  http://27jschools.schoolwires.net/prairieviewhs

Safety  Read through safety sheet with elbow partner (youngest 1 st )  Write 3 things that relates to the syllabus in journal  Homework: bring home, get signed  REMIND.COM

You - Acrostic  S – silent  A – approachable  R – respectful  A – academic  H – helpful  On the front page of your journal, create an acrostic poem using your 1 st name to describe you  Done? Draw 3+ pictures that represent you

Share at your table  Have the youngest person talk first  Objective: SWBAT explain what makes a class run smoothly

Alphabetical Class  You have 10 minutes to arrange yourselves alphabetically  How can we quantify this information?

Tally them up page 3 in journal  A-E  F-K  L-Q  R-T  U-Z

Graph it  Page 3 in journal  Bar graph  Evidence:  Answer page 3 in journal:  How does getting to know your classmates help you do better in class?

Friday, August 21 Warmup  On page 4 in journal:  What is a pretest?  Why should you take it?

Pretest on physical science  Do your best  If you know it all, you shouldn’t be here!

Card tower  Which team can build the highest card tower in 10 minutes without talking?

What does teamwork: page 4 in journal?  Look likeSound like

Evidence  On page 4 in your journal, describe using complete sentences how you worked together as a team to complete the challenge

Warmup: Monday, August 24 OBJ: SWBAT use the scientific method to solve problems  Answer on page 4 in journal.  What do you think will happen if we put both cans into a tub of water? Why?

Density Lab SWBAT determine the density of a material  With your elbow partner, read through the lab.  Answer questions on prelab  Lab safety sheet: Have to get it signed to do lab tomorrow!

Homework:

Evidence  List 3 ways to be safe in tomorrow’s lab on page 4

Warmup: Tuesday, Aug 25  What is the formula for density?

Teams  1 reader  2 recorder  3 runner  4 experimenter  You have 20 minutes to gather all data

Clean up  GO back to seats  Do calculations  Answer questions

Wednesday, Aug 26 Warm up  The density of water is 1g/cm3.  Would the Hershey’s bar sink or float in water? Why?

Graphing  Using your graph on the front, what would the mass of ¾ths of the bar be?  2 rectangles?  4 rectangles? What does the slope of the graph equal?

Thursday, Aug 27 Warmup: SWBAT use the metric system to measure length, mass, and volume.  What is the metric unit of measurement for:  A. Length?  B. Mass?  C. Volume?  D. Temperature?  Answer all 4 questions!

Metric Olympics Obj: SWBAT use the metric system to determine distances, mass, and volume.  1. teams  2. each member estimates  3. Then completes event  4. record data  5. go back to seats  6. find differences  7. bar graph of differences  8. compare differences to teammates  9. write conclusion

Journal QUIZ Friday  1) cover page – name, 3 descriptors, 3 pictures  2) questions  3) 2 truths and a lie  4) cup activity  5) expectations  6) safety sheet  7) lab  8) homework

Graph, average, conclusion

Warmup: Friday, Aug 28  Jane estimated that she threw the cotton ball 130cm.  When she measured it, though, she found that she had actually thrown it 177cm.  What is the difference of her throw?  If Bob’s difference for the shot put was 30 cm, was he more or less accurate that Jane? 

Metric Olympics  15 minutes to finish

Conclusion  Write a paragraph concluding the Olympics.  How accurate were your predictions?  Did you get better at predicting over time?  Why might predicting things accurately be important?

Journal quiz  Done with quiz?  1) turn in journal  2) turn in metric olympics  3) start numbering pages to NEW JOURNAL (all fronts are odd, all backs are even)

Warmup: page 5 in NEW JOURNAL! Monday, Aug 31  Which of the following definitions of resolution best fit the PLUTO reading?  A. The solution to a problem  B. A firm decision to do something  C. The detail an image contains  D. A formal expression of opinion

Gyrocopters  Problem: How does changing the mass affect the time it takes for the copter to fall?  Hypothesis: If I add mass, the copter will _____________  OBJ: SWBAT use the scientific method to solve problems

Data Table OBJ: SWBAT use the scientific method to solve problems Trial 1Trial 2Trial 3Average (mean) 0 clips 1 clip 2 clips

Warmup, Sept 1 Page 4 or 5  As I increased the mass of the copter, the flight time _______  A. Increased  B. Decreased  C. Stayed the same

Design your own  Now you have to find a way to modify the copter to slow it down and make it accurately hit the target.

In your journal (page 5 or 4)  Problem: How can I make the copter the most accurate?  Hypothesis:  Procedure:  Data:  Conclusion:  ONLY CHANGE 1 VARIABLE at a time!

Conclusion, to turn in  Clear statement of purpose of lab  States clear and testable hypothesis  Makes a claim supported by evidence  Correctly uses data to support claim  Talks about 2 or more sources of error and how it might have affected data  Explains how you could relate lab to real world and how to extend lab  State what was learned from lab related to learning objective

Grades  Pretest – all in correct class!  Safety contract  Cover page  Fake journal  Homework  Journal quiz  Have NOT graded: density lab or metric olympics0

Wednesday, Sept 2 Warmup page 5  During the copter lab, the height on the lab paper said 100 cm. How many meters is that equal to?  A. 1 m  B. 2 m  C. 2.5 m
