3 ‘Toxic Agent’ is Re-Solv’s NEW resource for Years 5-6 children. Researched and developed by Kay Carter, in consultation with teachers and the children themselves, the project has taken three years to be completed. 4 Why Primary School? It is important to address this issue from late primary school onwards because children are aware of Volatile Substance Abuse from a young age. The youngest death was aged just 7 years old. Children need to have information to help protect them through the major social changes and exposure to new risks that occur as they transfer to secondary school. The lack of available resources mean that primary schools have the choice of ignoring the issue, addressing the issue blind or using resources that are not appropriate for the age group. 5 What is VSA? Volatile Substance Abuse (VSA) is the deliberate inhalation of the chemicals found in everyday products such as deodorant, hairspray and cigarette lighter refills. The range of products which contain solvents and volatile chemicals is extensive and widely available in household products or industrial commodities. On average there is one death a week from VSA. Since 1971 when records began, it has claimed over 2,000 lives, with just two thirds of these deaths under the age of 19 – the most common age being 16. The Facts VSA kills more young people than illegal drugs 1 in 10 children have ‘sniffed’ by the age of 13 (Dept. of Health survey) The biggest danger from misusing these products is INSTANT DEATH Continue Registered Charity Number 326732
