2. Reactions—Class discussion What works about the poem? What doesn’t? What were your initial reactions? What purpose do you think the author had for writing this poem? What do you think the speaker feels about the topic? What is the tone? How does the visitor feel about America? Which parts caused the most reaction out of you/the least reaction? Why do you think that is? What were some of the things you wrote when you annotated?

3. Citing lines in poetry To cite 1, 2, or 3 lines of poetry use quotation marks. Use a slash to indicate the break between lines. Put the line numbers in parentheses. Place the period at the end of the line number(s). Paulk writes, “Your children must attend a school that doesn't educate. / Your Christian values can't be taught, according to the state. / You read about the current news, in a regulated press” (17-19). The speaker states that, “while I am bedded upon soft green money/that grows like grass” (Ignatow 5-6). *Remember that when you mention the author in your sentence you don’t need to put his/her name in the parenthesis. When you don’t, you must.

4. Citing lines in poetry (cont.) When citing 4 or more lines in poetry, you must block indent the poem 10 spaces from the left margin and quotes aren’t needed. The period is placed before the pages. The visitor is Thelen Paulk’s poem is someone who may be warning Americans that we are beginning to lose the freedom we once have. For instance, he says: “You buy permits to travel, and permits to own a gun, Permits to start a business, or build a place for one. On land you believe you own, you pay a yearly rent. Although you have no voice in how the money's spent.” (13-16)

6. Response to Poem--Summative The speaker asks what you would say if asked whether America is still the land of the free and the home of the brave. Is it or not? Why or why not? You will answer in one detailed paragraph with your claim, evidence, and elaboration on that evidence. In your response, you will use evidence from both the Europe and America poem and this one. You need to use at least 2 references total, one from each text. You must mention the title and authors of both works. This should be at least ¾-1 page, written To be done Tuesday in class—due at the end of the day
