How to present yourself Getting a job can be a challenging process for anyone Every job offer is a two-way agreement that benefits both the employer and the employee The employer wants a good worker You want a job that you can do well and that pays an acceptable wage The way you present yourself when you apply for a job determines whether your get it.

Applying for a job Employers are required by law to use a fair and competitive process to hire new employees. Steps: Completing a job application Submitting a resume and cover letter Interviewing

Resumes Review of your own abilities and experiences Self-review leads to developing a written summary of your job A resume is a typed document that provides a brief history of your work experience and education Many employers ask for a resume along with your application

Employers When there is a large number of applicants employers will narrow down the field by selecting the best resumes Poorly written resumes-misspelled words, grammar will be eliminated Look on page 105

Cover Letters Informs the employer that you are applying for a position in the company A successful cover letter has four major parts A salutation and a reference to the specific job for which you are applying Information regarding your knowledge of the company A positive statement about the contribution you can make to the company Your desire for an interview, plus follow-up information PAGE 107

Interview First impressions happen in the first 10 seconds of meeting someone Interviewers tend to highly rate those who appear genuine, enthusiastic, and share the same values as the company Dress properly for a job interview T-shirts are not appropriate

Interview During the interview let the interviewer take the lead in the conversation Focus on hearing the questions and answer Sit up straight, smile and lean toward them directly Save questions regarding wages and benefits until you know that you are a finalist for the job You should always end the interview with a positive statement of your interest in the job

FIND A JOB! Local newspaper Pen and paper Cut out 5 ads that interest you and glue them to a sheet of paper Beneath each ad, list ways a person in this job would use technology How is technology changing the workplace?
