6 Business Communication Internal Communication: occurs between employees, owners & managers. Can be further classified into: Upward Communication Downward Communication Lateral communication External Communication: communicating to stakeholders of business. Business-to-business communication (suppliers etc.) Business to wider community (media etc.)

7 Communication Channels There are __ kinds of communication channels.

8 Communication Channels Formal: official channels for important messages. Management has total control. E.g. financial reports, brochures, company announcements. Semi-formal: formal channels, but some under management control E.g. discussions at company meetings Informal: often occurs through unintentionally established channels. Can be external or internal. Management has no control.

9 Informal Channels: McDonald’s Twitter Scandal Thanks to Twitter, information is spreading faster than ever. Unfortunately, so is misinformation. In June last year, a photo that seemed to depict a notice posted inside a McDonalds' shop circulated online.

10 Informal Channels: McDonald’s Twitter Scandal The photo circulated so quickly that the words “#Seriously McDonalds" hit the Twitter trending topics list. McDonalds assures customers that the photo is false and no such notice has ever been posted in one of their locations. "That pic is a senseless & ignorant hoax McD's values ALL our customers. Diversity runs deep in our culture on both sides of the counter" read a tweet from their official account. “It’s a completely senseless, ignorant hoax by some pranksters” McDonald’s spokeswoman Heidi Barker said.
