3 Chernozem soil --the “black earth belt @ from western Ukraine to southwestern Siberia, contains the area’s richest soil. Good for growing grains makes this the area’s breadbasket

4 Caspian Sea - largest inland body of water in the world Lake Baikal - the world = s deepest lake.

5 Volga - the longest river in European Russia Ob - one of many rivers which flow northward Amur - the only river in Siberia which doesn = t flow northward. Its valley is a food-producing area.

6 Mineral deposits - Russia and the republics have almost every mineral used in industry. Energy Resources - the Volga provides hydroelectricity, Russia and nearly all the republics have natural gas and oil.

30 struggles since 1990 – Russia had a free election an attempted coup against Gorbachev failed, the Soviet republics declared their independence from the U.S.S.R. The U.S.S.R. simply ceased to exist. The Confederation of Independent States (CIS) has replaced the U.S.S.R. But is very weak. All of the former republics are switching from communism to capitalism and from dictatorships to democracy, it has been a rough switch.
