Students are encouraged to learn in an independent fashion and develop confidence in improving their ranging BLP (Building Learning Power) skills. Sets are streamed in year 9, as this is when the preparation for GCSE study begins. A mathematics challenge club is run to stretch the most able pupils, and they are encouraged to solve more unusual problems that they may not get to see in the classroom. For those who attend this club, there is an opportunity to take part in the UKMT Team Mathematics Challenge.
