2 1. Academic Adjective  Pertaining to a college or institution of learning; scholarly  Theoretical rather than practical; unrealistic EX: We need a plan of action, not an academic discussion. SYN: scholastic, speculative

3 2. Affluent Adjective  Prosperous, wealthy EX: He is always borrowing money from his affluent relatives. SYN: flourishing, well-to-do, opulent

Anachronism Noun  The misplacing of an object or event in a period to which it cannot possibly belong  Anything out of its proper time frame EX: He is a bit of an anachronism – he throws his coat over puddles so his wife’s feet won’t get wet. SYN: incongruity, inconsistency, contradiction; throwback

5 4. Array Verb  To line up; to dress up Noun  An imposing grouping; rich and beautiful attire EX: The impressive array of uniformed soldiers marched during the Veteran’s Day Parade. SYN: align, assemble; lineup

7 6. Benign Adjective  Gentle and kindly  Wholesome or favorable EX: Though a bear cub may look friendly and benign, it is still dangerous. SYN: benevolent, favorable

8 7. Boycott Verb  To refuse to buy, use, or deal with as a way to protest some form of behavior. Noun  An instance of such treatment EX: Martin Luther King Jr. led the boycotts of segregated buses. SYN: ban, blacklist

9 8.Candid Adjective Fair and impartial; frank or outspoken; informal or not posed. EX: You can’t expect diplomats to be as candid and forthright as an average person. SYN: objective, unreserved, spontaneous

15 14. Beseech Verb To implore urgently or beg. Ex: When Will Smith wanders through the city, people beseech him for his autograph. Synonyms: petition, solicit

16 15. Plaintive Adjective Expressing sorrow or melancholy Ex: A plaintive mood filled the room with the news of my grandfather’s death. Synonym: mournful
